Movies

Yeah, so I saw a lot of movies this weekend.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age - Mediocre, at best. Slow and dragged on. Shorten it to 2 hours and it's golden. It's not, so it fails.

Michael Clayton - Amazing. Everything about it is awesome. However, it's VERY complex and mind bending. You have to think, so be prepared. I still feel like I'm missing key details of exactly what happened. Gotta see it again.

Across the Universe - Perfect is one word that comes to mind. It just works. And, contrary to many people I bet, the movie is best viewed sober. Trust me.

I just watched the squeal to District 13 (Ultimatum) and it was pretty damn entertaining. I would easily recommend both movies to anyone that likes action movies but please don't watch the terrible dub.

I caught Iron Man 2 last night - quite good.

Spoiler!

Overall, I think I preferred the first Iron Man, but the second one was very good.

I have the Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus from Netflix. That's on tap for today.

In addition to rewatching Iron Man and seeing Iron Man 2 last night, I watched Crazy Heart. I found the screenplay to be kind of forced, a little labored. Jeff Bridges gave a marvelous performance however.

Watched A Few Good Men and I thought it surpassed it's reputation. A solid movie about people, their worldviews, their responsibilities, our country and its foundations, morality, and a host of other important things. The ending was a bit sappy and heavy handed, though. But that's pretty much my only detracting thing to say, along with a sloppily edited scene in the rain with the lawyers. My girlfriend and I afterward talked about whether Jack Nicholson's character could be given any sympathy. I was definitely a 'no,' but there were some alright points to be made for the other side. It just cemented in my mind that the best way to watch any movie is with talking about it after (or reading works or reviews about it alone -- whatever works).

The ending was also complete horseshit. First off, the entire sentencing phase of the trial (called "extenuation and mitigation" in a court-martial) was skipped. Evidence is presented by both sides, and then the members, not the judge, deliberate on a sentence. Plus, those kids would NEVER have been convicted of anything after the truth of the case came out.

Don't get me wrong, I love the movie, but God that ending made me want to throw shit at the screen.

The most accurate thing this movie portrays is the attitude of JAG corps lawyers. With few exceptions, the younger ones are lawyers first and foremost and officers only as an afterthought. Cruise nailed the young hotshot will will do his six years and move on to bigger and better things; Moore nailed the bumbling lifer who can't cut it in a courtroom.

Just watched Nine. The musical with the insane cast. It was very much 'meh.' DDL was stupendous, as always, but the film itself was bloated and weirdly Fruedian and it didn't connect with me.

I'm glad you saw my post. You were the inspiration for seeing it.

The trial being Hollywood-ized wouldn't surprise me a bit. They had the lawyers going back and forth on cross-examinations that didn't seem real at all.

Granted, I never sat in a murder trial with heavy political implications, but yeah, it was pretty far-fetched. I never saw anybody act up or lose their shit the way lawyers and witnesses alike did in this movie. But up until the very end it was at least vaguely plausible.

If you compare the Few Good Men trial to the bus in Speed, most of the trial is like the bus maintaining 50 mph through all the obstacles - the ending is like the bus jumping the missing section.

I watched The Class today. Pretty damn good film. It is like watching a French version of the classroom storyline from Season 4 of The Wire. It feels so realistic that I completely lost track of that fact that I was watching actors give performances and started to think of it subconsciously as a documentary.

I don't know about every branch of the military but I know Army JAG attorneys don't have to go through basic training or anything like that. My wife was offered a job with Army JAG after law school and she wasn't Army. She had just done an internship with the JAG during third year. So I'm sure some are attorneys much before they're officers.
