I thought you had to a tandem jump on your first jump. A 16 year-old panicked and didn't remember/take counter-measures during a spin. SHOCKER

Some places also offer static line jumps.

Nope most of the time that's the case, but not always. I have never gone on a tandem jump, my first two jumps were static line jumps, where the chute gets deployed after 25 feet. After that I was on my own.

A static line jump is no guarantee either.
My BIL was medically discharged from 82nd Air Borne for compression fractures (plural) to his spine when his chute failed to completely open but he only augured in from about 300-350 ft. Had his chute failed to open at all he’d be paralyzed.
He's about an inch shorter now than he used to be too.
