BCS commissioners might tweak bowl formula with new poll

The Bowl Championship Series is considering a poll conducted by the National Football Foundation to replace the Associated Press poll for this season's BCS standings. The foundation poll would consist of athletic administrators, media representatives and former coaches. The BCS is looking for a replacement to the AP poll. Earlier this year, the AP informed the BCS it no longer wanted its poll as part of the formula that helps determine the nation's top two ranked teams. Those teams meet in the BCS championship game. The National Football Foundation is a Morristown, N.J.-based organization that promotes college football and operates the College Football Hall of Fame and Play It Smart, an educational program that helps inner-city high school programs and athletes. The BCS commissioners will meet next week in Phoenix. • LEWIS IN HALL: Leo Lewis, a running back at Lincoln (Mo.) University in the 1950s, was among the small-college players and coaches elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Ind. The induction will be this fall. The Blue Tigers went 27-5-3 in his collegiate career. Lewis played in the Canadian Football League for 11 years and is in the CFL Hall of Fame. Lewis gained 4,457 yards in his career with a single-season best of 1,239 yards. He scored 64 touchdowns in his career with a single-season best of 22. He was All-America twice. — Blair Kerkhoff/The Star |
