* Chargers will raise ticket prices for '06

It is an odd sight at first, if only because it makes so much sense.

On the second floor of a condominium in Pacific Beach, there is a small kitchen made even smaller by a 6-foot-5, 310-pound man in an apron moving to and fro across the linoleum.

But it takes hardly any time to realize Mike Goff is quite at home.

Not many 29-year-old bachelors have a kitchen as full of cooking gear (or the ability to use it) as Chargers offensive lineman Mike Goff.
Truly, it is not a stretch to think he might be almost as comfortable making soup as he is blocking defenders trying to take a swipe at Drew Brees or LaDainian Tomlinson.

Goff, the only Chargers offensive lineman to start every game this season, is having what many consider to be his finest season in an eight-year NFL career.

He and the entire offensive line are coming off a strong performance in Indianapolis and will need to play well again tomorrow at Kansas City as the Chargers attempt to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Regardless of what happens tomorrow, Goff will host friends, including some of the Chargers' young offensive linemen, for Christmas dinner on Sunday.

At one point, he was considering deep-frying a goose.

He always likes to try something new, as he did when he deep-fried a turkey on Thanksgiving.

"He's a good cook," said rookie lineman Scott Mruczkowski, a Thanksgiving guest of Goff's.

It was Mruczkowski who summed up the amusement that is an offensive lineman as a chef.

"It is funny," Mruczkowski said. "Not too many offensive linemen like to cook. We love to eat, but we don't like to cook."

Goff never prepared much more than noodles before happening upon Emeril Lagasse cooking chicken Parmesan on the Food Network about five years ago.

"I'm like, 'Damn, that looks good,' " Goff recalled. "I jotted down the recipe. I took notes, saw what he did. I was like, 'Why don't I give that a try?' "

He did.

"It was awful," he said. "But the second time was a little better. I took my time, didn't rush it."

Emeril is a favorite influence for Goff. He refers to him often. In fact, it is an Emeril recipe for cedar plank steak that Goff tried out on a recent Tuesday night when he somewhat reluctantly allowed a reporter and photographer to join his usual Tuesday dinner party.

For the record, the food was superb, as fine as anything to be found in any of the restaurants Goff scouts in the various cities the Chargers visit.

"I love to eat other people's cooking," Goff said.

People love eating his.

John Ruedebusch and Prachi Karnik, two of Goff's friends, joked that they have given up having their own dinner parties in order to enjoy Goff's cooking.

"He always makes three times as much as needed, so everyone can take something with them," Ruedebusch said.

Goff noted the leftovers from this particular Tuesday "will be Prachi's lunch for the next day."

Said Karnik: "Three days."

There was an abundance on this night.

The meal began with a loaded baked potato soup. Then, after Goff spent much time going back and forth from stirring and chopping in the kitchen to tending to the meat on the barbecue, came the main course and its accoutrements.

Steak cooked on cedar planks, topped with Gorgonzola cheese and sage. Cream spinach. Candied carrots.

The steak, as mentioned, was borrowed from Emeril, a sort of through-the-tube mentor.

The carrots were a recipe from Mom, who is still amazed her son actually cooks. The son she knew growing up was the pickiest eater in Illinois.

"I know," Goff said. "It's hard to believe a fat guy would be picky."

To this day, if it's a choice between broccoli and death – "Give me death," Goff said.

Goff is witty like that all night, a departure from the indifference he often puts forth for the media.

"I've got a simple philosophy when it comes to my cooking," he said. "If it doesn't taste good, we can always order pizza."

It can be learned in an evening with Goff that the big man is truly whimsical.

Traveling is another of his passions. And while he plans some of his vacations, an advantage of being single and rich and possessing a few months off every winter is that planning is not always necessary.

During dinner he is reminded of a spur-of-the-moment trip he took, with cooking as its genesis.

A few years back, during his time with the Bengals, he was watching a Food Network program on Maine lobsters.

"I was thinking, 'Man, that looks good,' " he recalled.

So he walked upstairs, packed a bag and started driving northeast. He made some stops along the way before reaching his goal: eating lobster in Maine.

It all comes back to cooking.

Another hobby is crosswords, and the margins of many of his puzzles are filled in with recipes and notes about things he has seen prepared on the Food Network.

"It's a rewarding experience," he said of cooking. "People get to come over and hang out and have a good time. That, and I get to use them as guinea pigs."

Gives you maybe 2 years. Solidifies our Guard spot, but probably means Niswanger stays at Center.

Eh... I still draft three O-Linemen come April.
