I live down the road (like 6 miles) from the mansion they used for the exterior shots in the first season of the old version. It burned down at some point and now it's just this giant frame in a field.

I guess the guy who owned the house they used in the first season watched the show and objected to the content, so he said they couldn't use it anymore. So they started using Southfork after that.

Maybe that's the real story. From what I read after it burned he had too much debt to rebuild. Or had a bunch of lawsuits or something. Then he died and I think his kids fought over money. It sits there partially built, this giant structure of a mansion. The ranch still operates.
