Gman - Completely agree! Our Zone looks more like a prevent D then a regular D, because it allows the other team to drive down the field almost at will.

I think we have to play a little more soft zone to protect some of these kids (Bartee, Dennis, Warfield, Wesley). It's frustrating but hopefully as they get more experience and confidence they'll improve.

Protect them from what? Getting burned? Too late for that.

G-they've given up a lot of pass yards but they haven't gotten burned for any homerun strikes that I can remember. KC fans can't scream and yell that we don't play the "kids" than get upset when they make rookie mistakes. I think the secondary looks ok, it's the O that worries me.

True, they've given up no homerun strikes. But I think the consitency of competions allowed in the zone is just as frustrating. I didn't SEE this game, just listened to it, so i AM making assumptions. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

AZ - I know what your saying it and thinking it as well, but I don't like our zones, because they have been bad for a few years. I also think it kills a team when it blitzes if you don't get the push on the WR to throw off the timing. Now if they want to run the zone then at least get these rookies pushing the WR then fading into their zone. That way when we chose to run 1 on 1 the Offense will not know for sure because we are doing the same thing on every play.

Wesley got killed in OT on third and 8, I've got to admit that and we were picked apart by O'Donnell. It seemed like Kurt changed the rush and stopped blitzing against him which I don't understand becuase he is immobile as anyone in the league. Our secondary is young but I thought they played pretty well. It's tough to play D when your Offense puts up only 7 pts.

Some comments:
"After Hasty left the game," Thigpen said, "they laid back in a zone. We were able to find some holes." The Chiefs sacked O'Donnell twice, including once on fourth down on his first possession that killed a Tennessee drive. But defensive coordinator Kurt Schottenheimer refused to blitz him. He was fearful of leaving the young defensive backs one-on-one in man coverage. "We had three rookies out there," coach Gunther Cunningham said. "I'm sure Kurt was going through some sort of mental gymnastics of which way to go. He asked me. I said, `Kurt, keep calling them the way you've been calling them. You're doing a good job. Stay within what you've been doing and continue to call them the same way.' " "It doesn't change a thing, or it shouldn't," Woods said. "But I guess from a coaching standpoint, you'd better be a little more safe than sorry."
|

I agree, if our DBs jammed the receivers at the line than fell back into zone it might disrupt the timing a little more. I hate that feeling of just getting picked apart. Reading the comments posted it appears we did change our scheme with the "kids" in. It was apparent in AZ. Man, I hope these kids develop because they are very young! It's kind of exciting... AZ |

This is a concept I've never understood:

Changing up a defense that you've been successful with on 3rd downs or end of game situations... I've always believed that defensive players are aggressive by nature and that any defense that makes them passive (zone/prevent) is self defeating... Defense should dictate to the offense!... Stay aggressive on the pass rush, bump and run the corners, and if you don't have upmost confidence in them... play your safeties in a two deep.... Most QB's will pick apart zones... it's when they are under pressure the mistakes come.... All of a sudden I'm having flashbacks of Willie Shaw for two years...(ackkkk)....thud ------------------ All alone at the top!! |
