We should have one of the top Ds within the next two years for a long, long time

Dorsey, Powe, Jackson
Houston, Johnson, Bailey, Hali
Berry, Lewis, Flowers, Carr

That is a ton of young talent.

That isn't even including guys like Studebaker, Arenas, Sheffield, or even Gilberry and Smith.

It is just what I am projecting as the starting lineup by the end of the year.

In the 2011 draft, we filled those holes on D and the other players, still young, have another year under thier belt. It is hard to beleive that DJ will be the "old man" of the group.

This year will be the true trail by fire with the schedule that we have; that is why I think 2 years is the optimal time frame.
In 2010 we also had the advantage of playing one of the easiest schedules I can remember. So I'm not so confident to point at 2010 and say we should be better than that this year simply because we added some guys with potential. One season of improvement isn't enough for me to say there's an indication we're definitely on the rise. We don't know that the holes on D have been filled. Those kids haven't even stepped on the field yet, let alone proven they can fill any holes.

I'm excited about the D potential too. But let's be a little realistic. It's going to be a tough schedule this year. And everyone still seems drunk on draft juice. Making future predictions fresh off the excitement for the draft generally doesn't turn out well...

Head coaches are instrumental to talent evaluation. The coaches are the guys that know the defense and offense, not the GM. The coach has to communicate what kind of guys he wants and then a guy like Kuharich instructs his scouts on what kinds of players to look out for. While there's no proof that he had say in the war room, it was pretty clear that he and Kuharich were completely in sync and that Herm was very involved in the scouting evaluation process.

Also, was there ever any real complaint about Herm not getting the right guys on the field? He gave Surtain the boot, was unafraid to plug Albert in at LT even though many thought he'd play right away at Guard, and wasn't afraid to quickly get Flowers and Carr in there to start. Even though it turned out to be the wrong decision, I think we all were happy to see Niswanger at least get a chance to fail on the field rather than on the practice field.

I think if Peterson didnt' stupidly chase Jared Allen away and the Chiefs had a legit Defensive Coordinator, the Chiefs could have had a really dominant defense as soon as 2009.

In 09, they gave up 300 yards rushing to the freaking Browns. There was a dramatic improvement in player progression, tackling, and gap assignment regardless of the schedule. Even leaving out the rooks, the D is still young and ascending. There is much reason to be excited.

Also, people forget that Kuharich was a complete disaster in New Orleans. Let's not rule out the importance of the coach and the GM being on the same page.

It doesn't you're right.

But this draft at least leaves most Chiefs fans stoked over the fact that we have drafted based on selecting the best quality players available to satisfy positions of need. Automatically, that increses our potential to be better as a team. How this team performs according to their schedule, is a different story. I say its best to just wait and see. Take it one step at a time. That is the best way to approach those type of circumstances/situations. Lets see whether or not the rookies in this 2011 Chiefs draft class will have a profound effect on overall team performance.

And if they do great! At the very least, I feel good knowing we have increased our chances of becoming better which will probably enable us to compete against a strong schedule.

It's also a different story when the guys these people are replacing are beyond terrible. We are a much better defense if Houston is only good enough to keep a QB in the pocket so he can't run away from Hali. We are a much better defense if Powe actually takes out ANY blocker at the Nose. And I can't imagine Jalil Brown can be worse than any player we feature in our Dime packages.

I agree, dominant? No. But we could probably predict that this defense is going to be better with the potential to be significantly better (if even just one of those guys plays well).

I've watched this board go through 10 drafts and I must say I don't ever remember this much of a combined positive attitude.

We're stocked with young defensive talent.
If we can add players like DeAndre McDaniel and Ian Williams after the lockout is over we'll even have some depth.

Hopefully it'll be Powe.

If there is a steal in this draft, I sure hope its him. You, the rest of the world and myself know that effective NT play is what will take this defense to the next level and beyond.
