Andy Reid with Peter King

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/nfl...ng-peter-king/

Four questions with Andy Reid ...

Not long before the end of the season, I wanted to ask Andy Reid whether he'd be interested in writing something around the time of the Super Bowl for Sports Illustrated. He said no -- even though in his youth he wanted to be a sportswriter. He thought he might be otherwise occupied. I'd felt he wouldn't take a year off from coaching up to that point, but then I knew if there was a job out there, he'd want it.

Q: So, since you've been named the Chiefs' coach, many people wonder: 'With everything you've been through -- your son Garrett's death by overdose, the turbulent year on and off the field you just went through -- why not take a year off to recharge and get your life back in order?

Reid: "Because I love what I do. Garrett loved what I did. It doesn't feel like work. I didn't want to sit home and not coach. What was I going to do? There was nothing I wanted to do as much as coach football. The thing with Garrett ... it was not very sudden; this was a long, long process. Unfortunately, [drug addiction] is so rampant in America, and people who have gone through it realize that you don't just -- as in my case -- lose a son; you lose a great friend. Now I'm able to bring my other son here. [Reid hired Britt Reid, who also had drug-addiction issues, to be a Chiefs quality-control coach.] Remember, he lost his best friend. But I am so proud of how far he's come. And it says something about him that the three coaches he worked for at Temple wanted him to come with them. The other side of this is working to move on like a man and handle what life throws at you. We're doing that.''

Q: Why the Chiefs? Why not, say, Arizona, or the other places you were linked to?

Reid: "The Hunt family is one of four or five bedrock families in the NFL that I always thought, 'If I'm ever released [by the Eagles], if one of those families calls, I'd listen.' The history here is so rich, the tradition is so rich, the fan base is so strong.''

Q: What's the one overriding thing you take from Philadelphia into this job?

Reid: "I learned to embrace a city in Philadelphia. They'll take you from boyhood to manhood, which they did with me, and that's okay. It's a results business. I got that. As far as the team goes, it's imperative that everybody's pulling in the same direction. That's the only way you can succeed."

Q: What's your take on the talent you inherit?

Reid: "Before I interviewed with the Chiefs, I looked at every snap from every [Kansas City] game this year. Special teams were average. The talent overall, it looked to me like they were transitioning from an older team to a younger one. And I thought, 'With a couple, three drafts, very good things can happen here."

Was Powe's rookie rating higher than Poe's?

This is also why I think Poe should be a NT exclusively. Anchor and push the pocket. I'm not sure he's gonna be much use for anything else, but I think he can definitely excel in that role.

All I cared about this year primarily was that Poe showed he could be productive in subs and be an active pass-rusher. He largely disappointed but flashed at times. I hope to see improvement in that and ideally improvement in both playing 2-gap and 1-gap in base packages, as well as playing with a lower pad level and busier hands.

It's interesting because Romeo told us all Poe was going to be a better pass rusher than run stuffer early.

The best part of his game as a rookie was making plays in the run game. 29 stops in the running game is very decent.

Yup. Even showed that in the pre-season.

Yeah, that's not an exaggeration. Nevermind that in week 11, the source you cite over and over and over again said he showed "amazing consistency" and at the time ranked 15th in run-stop percentage with a decent 7.5%.

Totally ridiculous. Baldwin is garbage. I have never liked the guy and warned people he was never going to improve. He doesn't have a ceiling. Poe has a huge ceiling.

Dontari Poe hasn't done shit in college or in the NFL. I don't give a crap that he ran a nice 40 in shorts. Being a 350-pound Vernon Gholston isn't impressive.
Gholston's stock wasn't based on his combine. It was based on him beating up bad competition in college, and was based on a lousy scouting process that assumed he was a hard worker, even though everyone knew he's lazy once you take him out of the gym. Don't act like these are the same guy. Poe's physical skills aren't just above average like Gholston or Baldwin. They are freakish.

His upside is and always has been much better than these guys. And no, I am not changing course on that. I didn't like Gholston or Baldwin from the start.

Romeo was being an idiot. That's a part of Poe's game that will take longer to develop, and it's not easy being a pass rusher in a defense that doesn't give their linemen flexibility to stunt and attack.

The fact he made a few plays against the run doesn't change the fact he was dogshit.

I won't say he was dogshit.

He did however have an exceptionally underwhelming year for a top 12 pick IMO. However, one mus consider that he was drafted from Memphis, which isn't exactly excellent at teaching DL for a 3-4 2-gap NT.

I hate to wade into this acid bath again, but Gholston had one of the most ridiculous combines ever. The guy ran a legit 4.6, put up preposterous weight, had a 40+" vertical, near 10.5 foot broad jump, and had 22 sacks in the Big Ten his last two years in the conference. He obviously ended up being a soft player that lacked drive and any type of aggressive streak, but he didn't just have merely average physical tools.

He had ridiculous physical tools and big time college production. They didn't translate.

It would almost be impossible for Dontari Poe to not be a better pro than Gholston, but calling him freakish and Gholston above average from an athletic standpoint just annihilates any credibility and/or persuasiveness you have.

Sorry, I didn't remember much about Gholston's combine. I only remember watching him play at OSU and I knew long ago the guy wasn't going to be good in the NFL.

Personally, it was before my time but I do recall being shocked at his comine #s and his production.

What I remember from Gholston was that he showed up huge in college against really bad offenses, and then got kind of swallowed up against the good ones. I follow the Big 10 a bit more than other conferences, and remember people constantly asking... how is it that this freakishly big guy plays so soft?

I think I might have had delusions at the time that maybe his was just too freakish in talent to pass up. But if I compared Gholston to anyone, it's Baldwin, not Poe. I never sensed from either of those guys that they really give a shit or that they'll respond well to coaching. I like Poe's upside only because I think he has the right attitude to start playing up to his body.

Gholston was always a ripped mother****er, I saw a pic from him last year. Additionally, in college from what I;ve gathered from youtube, he had some pass rush moves. WTF happened?

Did he really just quit, because that it what it looks like when I pull up Jets films of him.

Reason I see a lot of gholston in Baldwin is these are guys who would rather be in a gym than on the field. People assume they have work ethic because they're cut. Gholston never struck me as a guy who cared that much about football. I imagine he just didn't have the passion. In baldwins case... I don't think it's about not having passion, as much as it is he feels too entitled to work hard on the field.
