My sister just called and said to buy my nephew a bocce ball set for Christmas? WTF?
Anyone ever play this or know something about it?

Yes!! It's a blast! It's an old Italian game. I played it once this summer with a bunch of my girlfriend's friends. It's a lot of fun. I highly recommend it! We have a Bocce ball park within 10 miles of my house...
