Actress Natasha Richardson reportedly brain dead after ski accident
If this story is true it's not only very sad but very scary. I had never heard of the syndrome that might be the cause of her becoming fatally ill. I'm so sorry for her family.
http://www.nypost.com/seven/03172009...ead_160027.htm http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/thed...ing-to-un.html According to unconfirmed reports, Natasha Richardson has been declared brain dead after a ski accident Monday at a Canadian resort. The New York Post reports that the actress' unnamed friends say she is on life support and is on her way to New York for friends and family to say goodbye. But there's been no official confirmation of this terrible news. A spokesperson at Sacre Coeur Hospital in Montreal, where Richardson, 45, was taken Monday night, would only say Richardson is no longer in Canada. Richardson was feeling fine for nearly an hour Monday after falling on a beginner's run during a private ski lesson. The British-born Richardson was not wearing a ski helmet during ski lesson on the Nansen, a beginners’ run. Richardson was at the bottom of the run, in what is known as the flats, during the midafternoon lesson when she fell and tumbled down the hill. Media reports said her sons, Micheal, 13, and Daniel, 12, were with her at the time of the accident. She did not hit anyone or anything before coming to a stop and the ski instructor was by her side within seconds, the spokesperson for Sacre Coeur said. There was no sign of injury, no cut or bleeding. Two ski patrollers helped Richardson but she was able to walk to her room at the resort’s Quintessence Hotel, where she'd been staying since Sunday. Britain's BBC reports that a member of Richardson family, who asked not to be named, said the family was "very distressed." We pray that this report of her being brain dead is not true and that Natasha, a terrific actress, wonderful mother and loving wife, will be OK. Last edited by memyselfI; 03-17-2009 at 08:33 PM.. |

As for the story, it's a little early to declare her brain-dead, is it not?
Anyway, I wish her the best. A freak accident, obviously. On three separate occasions, I've seen peeps ski directly into trees or the little houses by the lift at 30 miles an hour, land like a sack of flour with skis flying and poles and arms and legs all akimbo, get right back up, and walk away. It makes you wonder how many of those peeps suffered severe problems later. I've never really thought of it before. FAX |

I heard something about this on the news before I came to work tonight, but it didn't mention anything about her being brain dead. It did say she would be brought back to a US hospital.

So this is more than a little creepy for me, since I literally just came back from the slopes. I ride blacks and double blacks and go on tree runs, etc....risk is part of the sport and you know everytime you go up you might not come back down. There are alot of things you can do to protect yourself, but the truth is the only way to be safe is to stay in the lodge.
That said I'm not sure I buy all of the story there has to be more too it. I've ridding all over north america and if she was on a beginner slope, then you're not really going to tumble very far or even very hard. Green runs are terrible, because for the most part they are flat. It's not actually easy to pick up alot of speed on them and speed is what tends to cause the damage in the fall. Now there is one major exception...what were the resort conditions. The one place that can be dangerous for anyone is if it is ice conditions. Even if the run is groomed, if it's icy you likely have a few inches of loose snow followed by very hard ice. If she fell on ice and directly hit her head then it would have been like hitting concrete and that could have caused serious trauma. That said if it wasn't icy then I'm not sure I by that her condition was caused by a fall on a beginner run. Either some other condition caused the fall(seizure? or mild stroke or blood clot) or she wasn't really on a beginner run. It's just hard on those runs to build up enough force for real impact, unless it's icy...otherwise the snow is pretty damn effective at breaking your fall.

You're carrying on like hardpack/surface ice is a rarity on beginner runs, when it really isnt. Greens tend not to be two feet deep in powder. |

I have looked at CNN and Headline news and neither report mentions her being braindead.

Terrible for her and her family and, while I wish her the best and hope for recovery, I find stories like these doubly disturbing because if she wasn't a celebrity this would get ZERO coverage.

She was bigger like 10-15 years ago. She was an up and comer. Last big movie i remember her being in was "Nell" The one where Jodie Foster played the crazy girl in the woods.
Shes actually pretty attractive and so is her sister Joely who was on Nip/Tuck for several years.
