First Half - Closer look at the Offense

First Quarter

1st and 10 at KC 20 (13:27) K.Davis left guard to KC 31 for 11 yards (C.Johnson).
fake reverse handoff... effective key blocks from Hudson and Allen, angling defenders out on the left, while Kelce and Fasano do the same on the right... even Fish gets 2nd level block late on a LB after looking a bit lost.

1st and 10 at KC 31 (12:56) A.Smith pass short right to A.Fasano pushed ob at KC 47 for 16 yards (T.DeCoud).
PA rollout.. blocks were fine for this one, and Fasano with room to RAC.

1st and 10 at KC 47 (12:30) K.Davis left guard to KC 48 for 1 yard (T.Davis).
Sherman blocks the WLB well... Allen and Hud double the RDT in the 1 gap... Hud switches off to blitz SLB... Fish angles the RDE.. problem was, there was no one to block the MLB. If Knile would have gone a little to the left instead, he could have ripped a huge one towards the sideline. Bowe was just about to block the outside #23.

2nd and 9 at KC 48 (12:05) (Shotgun) A.Smith pass short right to D.Bowe to CAR 42 for 10 yards (A.Cason).
quick 3 step drop and throw, but Fulton still got owned by the LDT, beaten around outside shoulder. Fish didn't look sharp vs RDE, but he did enough... if Alex had needed to look elsewhere? crushed! as it was, tight throw between 3 defenders.

Timeout #1 by KC at 12:05.
1st and 10 at CAR 42 (11:20) (Shotgun) A.Smith pass short right to K.Davis to CAR 43 for -1 yards (L.Kuechly; A.Cason). PENALTY on KC-Z.Fulton, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at CAR 42 - No Play.
the timing was a mess for multiple players on this screen attempt. Hud and Fulton guilty of holding.. take your pick.

1st and 20 at KC 48 (10:54) (Shotgun) A.Smith pass incomplete short middle to A.Fasano (L.Kuechly).
nice PA and Fasano was open over the middle.. just awesome awareness and an athletic jump/tip by Kuechly of the pass... what an asshole! if Allen would have stepped towards Kuechly to engage, then maybe this jump/tip doesn't happen.

2nd and 20 at KC 48 (10:50) (Shotgun) A.Smith pass short right to K.Davis to CAR 46 for 6 yards (D.Edwards).
quick throw to Davis on a curl route... had to be quick.. Fish quickly lost the edge vs RDE and the LDE put Steph on skates back to the QB.. bobbled catch.

3rd and 14 at CAR 46 (10:09) (Shotgun) A.Smith pass short right to K.Davis to CAR 36 for 10 yards (T.DeCoud; T.Davis).
the rush was closing in, but overall held long enough... checkdown to Davis to get into FG range.

4th and 4 at CAR 36 (10:09) R.Succop 54 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-T.Gafford, Holder-D.Colquitt.
Drilled that one.. looked like it would have been good from 60.
____________________________________________________________________

1st and 10 at KC 27 (8:16) K.Davis up the middle to KC 32 for 5 yards (A.Cason).
looked like Davis wanted to run behind Allen, but Allen got shoved back in the lane by the RDT.. Hud cleared off a LB after initially engaging the LDT.. nice juke to make the crashing LE miss.. Steph whiffed his cut of the LE and then was a lost idiot.. staring at Davis instead of turning to block someone at the 2nd level.. Fasano kept the SLB away.. Fulton stuck with the LDT and kept him away... if Steph doesn't stop Davis' momentum and turns to block the DB, maybe there's a bigger gain.

2nd and 5 at KC 32 (7:45) (Shotgun) K.Davis left guard to KC 31 for -1 yards (L.Kuechly; C.Cole).
awful block fails from Allen and Hud on this one. Kuechly was free to close in untouched and wrap up.

3rd and 6 at KC 31 (7:14) (No Huddle, Shotgun) A.Smith pass short middle to D.Bowe to 50 for 19 yards (A.Russell) [W.Horton].
Fish got instantly beaten around the edge by RDE.. he may as well have been on the bench. Allen did enough to keep the RDT away.. HUd was free and essentially did nothing.. watching the LG battle all the way and letting a LB right thru the A gap.. Fulton and Steph were both beaten quickly around outside shoulders by the LDT and LE. Smith stood in there and delivered, but paid a price... big hit from the RDE. Had that been a QB like Brees or Brady, flags would have flown for hit to the head or helmet to helmet.

1st and 10 at 50 (6:32) A.Smith pass incomplete deep left to D.Avery (M.White). PENALTY on CAR-C.Johnson, Defensive Offside, 5 yards, enforced at 50 - No Play.
hard count got the LE to jump.. deep jump ball inc... the RDE spun inside and nearly crushed Alex as Davis dove for his lower half. free play FTW!

1st and 5 at CAR 45 (6:25) K.Davis right tackle to CAR 41 for 4 yards (A.Russell; L.Kuechly).
Allen pulls right, but then tries to turn around and block Sherman's assignment (the RDT).. Fish with a lazy MLB block, unsustained. HUd pulls far right to keep SLB away... Fulton escorts the LE out of the run lane well...

2nd and 1 at CAR 41 (5:43) K.Davis left end to CAR 44 for -3 yards (M.White).
Fisher fails to clear the outside on a pull and cut attempt. Great tackle by #23, but dude... c'mon, Fish! that's just pitiful!

3rd and 4 at CAR 44 (5:06) (Shotgun) A.Smith pass incomplete deep right to J.Hemingway.
Now this one is on Alex, IMO. The play design is to move to the right, and his best shot was Bowe on a hitch route. Now, I did not like Bowe's route.. it looked lazy and.. what's the word for not sharp? lol... Either way.. Bowe was open, and a well-timed pass should have been rather simple enough. Was Bowe the 1st read? should have been. So Alex takes the deeper, more challenging throw? SMH.. and then overthrows Junior's leaping hands by a foot and a half? ugh...

4th and 4 at CAR 44 (5:01) D.Colquitt punts 25 yards to CAR 19, Center-T.Gafford, downed by KC-J.Hemingway.
____________________________________________________________________

1st and 10 at KC 48 (3:09) (Shotgun) A.Smith pass deep right to D.Bowe to CAR 31 for 21 yards (T.DeCoud). 3 0
Pretty good pass pro from the rest, but Steph was giving too much outside rush to the LE. good 11 to 82 connection there!

1st and 10 at CAR 31 (2:36) (Shotgun) A.Smith pass short left to D.Bowe to CAR 25 for 6 yards (M.White).
easy quick out to an open Bowe.. who puts the "tackling" CB on his arse, lol. No pass pro issues.. too quick.

2nd and 4 at CAR 25 (2:14) A.Smith pass short right to D.Thomas pushed ob at CAR 15 for 10 yards (A.Cason). PENALTY on KC-A.Fasano, Offensive Pass Interference, 10 yards, enforced at CAR 25 - No Play.
deep drop, and though the edges were giving gradually from Fish and Steph, the overall pass pro was okay. Here we go... penalties rain!

Timeout #2 by KC at 01:45.
2nd and 14 at CAR 35 (1:45) A.Smith pass short right to D.Avery pushed ob at CAR 20 for 15 yards (C.Godfrey).
QB was instantly in trouble, as the LE gets around the edge and gets hands on Alex. Allen was late pulling over to the block as the RT and Co. blocked in. Smith shrugged off the "sack" with late help from Allen. Good find and pass to Avery at the sideline.

1st and 10 at CAR 20 (1:24) A.Smith pass deep left to A.Fasano to CAR 4 for 16 yards (T.DeCoud) [D.Edwards]. Carolina challenged the pass completion ruling, and the play was REVERSED. A.Smith pass incomplete deep left to A.Fasano [D.Edwards].
Fulton fails to block the rushing ILB, and no one picks up the other inside rushing backer. Just gets the pass away... Fasano can't secure it.

2nd and 10 at CAR 20 (1:20) A.Smith pass short left to D.Thomas to CAR 24 for -4 yards (A.Cason).
Fisher gets quickly shoved back into the QB as he throws... even with help from Allen. Good thing it didn't affect the ball location. Would have liked Smith to look elsewhere, but he wouldn't have had any time to anyway.

3rd and 14 at CAR 24 (:36) (Shotgun) A.Smith pass short right to C.Gray to CAR 26 for -2 yards (A.Cason).
blocks held enough for the screen, but no way was Allen going to get across the field in time to help, as designed. Hyd was where he needed to be, but missed his block on 58, lol... Fulton had a chance on blocking the tackling DB, but utterly failed in epic slothitude. Dude has awful feet and movement skills.

Second Quarter

1st and 10 at KC 7 (12:28) A.Smith pass incomplete short right to D.Avery.
PA rollout in the endzone... oh, I like this idea! (derp).. wild and off his feet throw was off target to Avery.. Good hustle and pursuit from the LE. Did the ball bounce off of Avery's foot??? lol! could he have at least tried to catch that? JFC

2nd and 10 at KC 7 (12:23) K.Davis right end to KC 14 for 7 yards (A.Klein).
pass pro holds up well enough... decent decision to hit Davis in the flat for YAC.

3rd and 3 at KC 14 (11:59) (Shotgun) PENALTY on KC-D.Stephenson, False Start, 5 yards, enforced at KC 14 - No Play.
Here we go... MOAR penalties! no play

3rd and 8 at KC 9 (11:37) (Shotgun) A.Smith scrambles left end to KC 18 for 9 yards (J.Norman).
pocket wasn't too bad, EXCEPT why in the hell Allen is in Alex's face? He is clearly the free blocker in zone, but essentially goes to help Fish and ends up right in the QB's way. Alex takes off and does well to convert the 1st.

1st and 10 at KC 18 (10:52) (Shotgun) A.Smith pass short right to K.Williams to KC 19 for 1 yard (A.Cason).
quick PA toss to Kyle W across the line. Bowe in slot needed to block the outside DB, but instead blocks inside guy. Outside corner makes excellent tackle.

2nd and 9 at KC 19 (10:15) A.Smith pass incomplete short left to D.Bowe (J.Norman) [D.Edwards].
HUdson falls down as he is getting beaten outside by the LDT.. Alex steps up to avoid the sack, and pass is a bit wobbly... ball got to Bowe, but was either dropped or the DB on his back knocked it away. Announcers are shocked that no Panther penalty was thrown for taunting of Bowe. Go figure... refs want these home crowds happy!

3rd and 9 at KC 19 (10:09) (Shotgun) A.Smith sacked at KC 10 for -9 yards (L.Kuechly).
Kuechly making no disguise of his coming blitz inside... Davis still fails to pick him up. Alex can either throw it and get blasted? or eat the sack and survive.

4th and 18 at KC 10 (9:27) D.Colquitt punts 40 yards to 50, Center-T.Gafford, fair catch by C.Brown
_____________________________________________________________________

1st and 10 at KC 18 (6:18) D.Thomas left tackle to KC 31 for 13 yards (M.White; A.Klein).
good block Hudson in keeping the RDT away.. good pull and cut from Allen on the LB... Fasano did well in sealing the RE to allow the pull from Fish, who did well in washing out the MLB. Bowe with good block downfield... Avery did well at first, but couldn't sustain his CB block. surprisingly decent downfield block for Fulton on a LB.. nice cut from DAT.

1st and 10 at KC 31 (5:37) A.Smith pass incomplete deep left to D.Avery.
Fish was getting beaten quick around the outside shoulder.. he lunged (grabbed on) to overcompensate, and then the RE spin move brough him to the QB as he was throwing. Either a shit pass, miscommunication, or affected pass as he was getting hit. Your call. Another pass that Avery either can't track... can't adjust for... or just is unwilling to try to for. I wouldn't be surprised on Alex having serious input today on whether Avery makes the team for long.

2nd and 10 at KC 31 (5:31) K.Davis up the middle to KC 33 for 2 yards (C.Johnson).
awful lunge and run block fail for Fisher vs RE.. Allen couldn't sustain block on RDT...

3rd and 8 at KC 33 (4:50) (Shotgun) A.Smith pass short middle to A.Fasano to KC 46 for 13 yards (L.Kuechly). Penalty on CAR-L.Kuechly, Defensive Pass Interference, declined. Penalty on CAR-M.Addison, Illegal Use of Hands, declined.
Steph was losing his block of the LE, but it all held up just long enough.

1st and 10 at KC 46 (4:28) K.Davis left guard to 50 for 4 yards (T.Davis; M.White).
not bad... Fish angles out RE well... Allen blocks the RDT to make a decent hole... HUdson initially does well on MLB, but Kuechly eventually clogs... Good vision and shifting of Davis.

2nd and 6 at 50 (3:54) (Shotgun) A.Smith pass incomplete short left to D.Avery.
good blocks overall on quick throw.. Hudson takes incoming MLB and Davis picks up other inside LB.. shameful effort by Avery, who doesn't get feet in bounds. Push-out rule FTL.

3rd and 6 at 50 (3:46) (Shotgun) A.Smith pass short right to D.Bowe to CAR 44 for 6 yards (J.Norman; C.Godfrey).
pocket closed quickly, but no major fail there. good throw and great effort by Bowe to squeeze out just enough for the 1st.

1st and 10 at CAR 44 (3:01) A.Smith pass incomplete short right. PENALTY on KC-E.Fisher, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at CAR 44 - No Play.
There was time on this 4 man rush... Fish finally broke down after holding the RE. Smith rolled right when pass rush closed in.. pitched it out of bounds. Must not have seen any viable targets he liked. Hope to not see much of these in the reg. season.

1st and 20 at KC 46 (2:53) A.Smith sacked at KC 37 for -9 yards (S.Lotulelei).
Timeout #3 by KC at 02:07.
so much fail here.. deep drop, PA fake... As was mentioned from the gif of the play, the edges closed quickly, but the QB would have been able to step up and away from that... IF... if Allen wasn't laying on the field after allowing the RDT to beat him instantly to the inside and take away the QB pocket.

2nd and 29 at KC 37 (2:07) (Shotgun) A.Smith pass incomplete short left to D.Avery (M.White).
Avery loses inside position on the slant.. ball batted up and nearly picked. Pass pro was ok for this quick hitter. Avery's effort? not so much.

3rd and 29 at KC 37 (2:03) (Shotgun) A.Smith pass short left to K.Davis to KC 47 for 10 yards (M.White).
Two-Minute Warning
screen play on a 3rd and 29... what is really worth saying here?

4th and 19 at KC 47 (1:56) D.Colquitt punts 43 yards to CAR 10, Center-T.Gafford, fair catch by C.Brown.

END OF HALF

could just be conspiracy theory (so far after that last game), but the home teams seem to get more leeway. Could it be to drive up excitement and revenue for the stadiums? Maybe they wanted Cam and Co. to show themselves as a legit threat to the NFCW crown? Sure felt like KC was the red-headed step-child in that game.

And there were moments when our WRs got absolutely mugged and nothing was called while our DBs were getting flagged for even breathing on a WR. It was ridiculous.

Don't tell me there's no damn agenda to make the league's stars look better than they actually are.

Penalties being emphasized and rules being created because some star got dominated in a huge game? Or a big money maker in the league got injured? Check.

Media talking up every 1st round QB or major market starting QB like he's the next coming of Joe Montana/Dan Marino? Check.

Oh how I long for the days of the hard hitting safeties in the league who were actually allowed to hit WRs coming over the middle or going deep. Or the days when pass rushers could hit the opposing QB as hard as they can without fearing any penalties from the league.

I agree with this. Basically, it looked like a preseason game.

Alex missed on that tip from Keuchly which is his fault, Fasano dropped an easy pass that ruined the drive which likely would have resulted in a TD.

I think with Charles back we'll be better, but we should have put 10 points on the board at the end of the 1st Q.

I haven't been keeping up with Chiefs news all week, but I assume that Albert Wilson was still a bit gimpy and didn't play?

no jumping on you, but if the pass was tipped? isn't that just a great defensive play? was Alex staring the pass down? or... ?

Coaching

I believe some teams coach 'cheating' better than others.

we do a shitty, shitty job of teaching players to bend the rules without getting caught.

Shows up most with OL,DB,WR

Oline holding without HOLDING
WRs setting a pick without looking intentional
DB's nagging WRs without holding

Shows up most with OL,DB,WR

Oline holding without HOLDING
WRs setting a pick without looking intentional
DB's nagging WRs without holding
Probably part of it, but I think reputation and consistent winning has something to do with it, too. It's sort of like how the best pitchers in major league baseball get a bigger strike zone. They sort of earn that privilege over time. Think it's the same way with both NFL teams and quarterbacks. Denver can get away with stuff now that they didn't a couple or three years ago, I think in large part because of Peyton Manning. I think they benefit from calls against the other team for exactly the same reason. Maybe we get the same treatment had we somehow brought him in (as impossible as that was realistically speaking...). Right now we're a crappy franchise that's played crappy ball for most of the last 15 years, and I don't think we either get or have earned a lot of respect or leeway from either the league or the officials. Maybe if we continue to win, if we start to build a reputation on either side of the ball, calls start to go our way. Or maybe not. I do think there's something to what you're saying, we still seem to have some issues with basic technique (like jamming receivers legally).
