Getting a passport

I'm getting a passport. Do I need the card and the book? Is the book just for stamping? Would the card be enough for me to travel with?

Yes, I'm researching it. I just know there are several people here who travel abroad, so I thought I'd pick your brains, too.

I agree it's better to just get the book but you only really "need" the card for the type of travel she will be doing. Even then she doesn't even need one, just bring a birth certificate + photo ID.

Ah, you're right. I thought the card was more expensive than it is. Still, I'd just get the book and be done with it.

Get the passport in book form...

Its cool to see your stamps over time.

I have been stamped in Mexico severals time, Nassau, Caymens,St Thomas, St Croix, Turks and Cacios,Canada, UAE, Pakistan (and have visa in Passport).

Its neat to go back and relive some of those moments looking through your passport.

All I know is that, should something happen and I get left behind, I have to have a passport to get back into the US. Is he card good enough for that?

All with $25 Execution Fee:

Card + Book = $165
Book = $135
Card = $55

It's been awhile sense I did it. I remember it taking awhile... but not as long as their advertised waiting period.

I'd go ahead and get the book so you'll have it in the future.

If you had to fly back, the card doesn't work. If you travel by land or sea, it does.

U.S. Passport Card
PURPOSE
The U.S. Passport Card can be used to enter the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda at land border crossings or sea ports-of-entry and is more convenient and less expensive than a passport book. The passport card cannot be used for international travel by air.

You might want to consider the last line they put in bold.

Was that a renewal? It's currently $110 for renewals, but they charge you an extra $25 if it's your first one.

That's what I've been debating. I don't need one. Having one would be nice just in case, but it's a waste of money if I end up never using it.

We went ahead and got the book. Because if something were to happen, and you had to fly you have to have the book. Don't get both. That would be dumb.
