Chiefs Franchise Statistics That Will Amaze You (Or Bore You)

I'm poking around the Chiefs franchise register on profootballreference (which is one of my favorite sites on the entire internet): http://www.pro-football-reference.co...on-passing.htm

Tyler Thigpen has more pass attempts in a single-season than Len Dawson. Thigpen attempted 420 passes in 2008, and Lenny's highest total was 357 in 1967.

The lowest interception percentage in a season by a QB that threw more than 100 passes is 0.6 percent, set by Damon Huard in 2006.

In only one season has a Chief QB had a quarterback rating higher than 100 with more than 100 attempts. It was Len Dawson in 1966.

Joe Montana had 13 seasons with more than 100 pass attempts. His two years as a Chief were his 11th and 12th best years in terms of QB rating.

Joe Delaney still has the 10th best rushing season (yards) in Chiefs history.

When counting 1000 yard rushing seasons, the Chiefs had 2 in the 1960s, 1 in the 1970s, 2 in the 1980s, 2 in the 1990s, 6 in the 2000s, and 3 so far in the 2010s. (That number will likely go to 4 this week if Jamaal gets more carries.)

When counting 1000 yard receiving seasons, the Chiefs had 1 in the 1960s, 1 in the 1970s, 3 in the 1980s, 2 in the 1990s, 8 in the 2000s, and 2 so far in the 2010s.

Derrick Alexander has the most receiving yards in a season (1,391 in 2000), but Otis Taylor has the most receiving yards per game in a season (92.6 in 1966).

The Chiefs' top five seasons in receiving touchdowns are held by five different players (Dwayne Bowe, Chris Burford, Otis Taylor, Tony Gonzalez, and Stephone Paige).

In terms of total kickoff return yards, Dante Hall has 5 of the top 6 Chiefs' seasons, and all of the top four.

In 1965, kicker Tommy Brooker made 5 of 13 fields from a range of less than 20 yards. (And weren't the goal posts 10 yards closer then?) However, he was 37 of 37 on extra point attempts that year.

In gross yards per punt, Dustin Colquitt has the top four seasons in Chiefs history. He also has the longest punt in Chiefs history at 81 yards.

The Chiefs have had 17 seasons where an individual kicker attempted 10 or more field goals from a range of 30 to 39 yards. Only once was the kicker perfect (Morten Andersen, 10 of 10 in 2002)

15 percent of all the points scored in the history of the Chiefs were recorded by Nick Lowery and Jan Stenerud.

Ryan Succop ranks third all time in points scored for the Chiefs, 17 points ahead of Priest Holmes and 55 points ahead of Tony Gonzelez.

The top 10 scorers in Chiefs history have scored 33.5 percent of the points in franchise history (Lowery, Stenerud, Succop, Holmes, Gonzalez, Stoyanovich, Larry Johnson, Otis Taylor, Jamaal Charles, and Abner Haynes)

Bobby Bell has the most defensive touchdowns in Chiefs history (8). Jim Kearney and Emmitt Thomas are tied for second with 5.

Dustin Colquitt still trails Jerrell Wilson by almost 8,000 yards and over 200 punts in terms of career production.

Only 35 people have ever kicked a punt for the Chiefs in a game, and only 26 people have ever attempted a field goal.

52 percent of all field goal attempts in Chiefs history have been by Lowery or Stenerud, as well as 44 percent of all extra point attempts.

43 percent of all punts in Chiefs history have been by Jerrell Wilson or Dustin Colquitt.

D'Anthony Thomas recently became only the 12th Chief ever to return a punt for a touchdown.

11 of the Chiefs' 47 kick returns for a TD (kickoffs and punts) were recorded by Dante Hall. Vanover added another 8.

Dante Hall has more kickoff return yards than the 2nd and 3rd players combined (Vanover and Dave Grayson)

Of the Chiefs' 10 career reception yardage leaders, only three have played more than half of their career in the 2000s. (Gonzalez, Bowe, Kennison).

The top three running backs in career receiving yards are Kimble Anders, Abner Haynes, and Ed Podolak. (Priest is fourth if you're wondering). Jamaal is currently 5th, and at his current pace is three seasons from moving into 1st.

Three of the Chiefs' top 10 all-time receivers (by yardage) lined up together from 1965 through 1967 (Otis Taylor, Chris Burford, and Fred Arbanas).

Dwayne Bowe is 2nd all time in receiving yards per game played, trailing only Derrick Alexander. Gonzalez is 3rd, Kennison is 4th, and Otis Taylor is 5th.

Jamaal Charles is 11th all time in receptions. He needs 32 more passes to tie Ed Podolak in 10th. Jamaal is 12th all time in receiving touchdowns, the most ever by a Chiefs running back.

Dexter McCluster ranks 20th all time in receptions.

Todd McNair ranks 16th all time in receptions, ahead of his teammates JJ Birden (17th) and Willie Davis (19th).

Knile Davis and Alex Smith rank 43rd and 44th in Chiefs career rushing yards.

Len Dawson ranks 1st in career rushing yards among Chiefs QBs. Alex Smith is currently 5th, but needs only 42 more yards to move past Mike Livingston, Trent Green, and Steve Fuller to move into 2nd. However, he is 582 yards behind Dawson.

Alex Smith is currently 9th in career passing yards, but will pass Steve Bono into 8th with another 223 yards. Joe Montana is 10th. Matt Cassel is 7th.

26 percent of all touchdown passes in Chiefs history have been thrown by Len Dawson. 51 percent have been thrown by Dawson, Trent Green, and Bill Kenney.

Matt Cassel was sacked on 6.8 percent of his pass attempts as a Chief. Alex Smith has been sacked on 7.8 percent. Len Dawson was sacked on 10.0 percent. Steve Fuller was sacked on 12.8 percent.

Alex Smith has the lowest interception percentage in Chiefs history among QBs with more than 100 attempts.

So bono is safe this year.

Chiefs are 55-56-9 vs San Diego all time. That's my fave. If not for Succops bedshit last year we'd lead all time series vs all 3 West rivals.

It's hard to compare the season-total stats from the present day against the 60s and 70s. They play more games per season and of course the rules now favor the passing game.
