Get to know your Coach: More Haley!

Quote:
Sorry if Re Post:
Who Is Todd Haley? The Morning Rush team at 610 Sports asked that question recently to a number of people in the media who have covered Haley and the teams he has coached for the past five years. I found their comments consistent, entertaining and excellent fodder for an OTC column. Enjoy.

_____
CHICAGO 2001 - 2004
“No (I didn’t think he’d eventually become a head coach). Absolutely not. As a matter of fact, he had kind of a love/hate relationship with some of the players. If someone had told me back then…I would never have pegged him as the guy who was going to pull the whole thing together and lead a team. No.”

Kate Delaney, former Cowboys beat reporter, when asked if she saw Haley as a future head coach when he was an assistant with Dallas,

610 AM
GH: Delaney was easily the most pessimistic of those members of the media that 610 contacted about Haley’s chances for success here in KC. She also appeared to be one of the few who said they got to know Haley well while he was in town. I didn’t read her comments as critical of Haley’s talents but more questioning of whether his act will play as the head guy.

“When Todd was here in Chicago his position (wide receivers) was always prepared. He was a very determined coach and he never took any flack from the players and that’s why I always respected him.”
Tom Thayer, former Chicago Bear and current radio analyst for the Bears.

610 AM
GH: A reoccurring theme seems to be that Haley doesn’t take any crap from anybody. That might be because as a college golfer, he gets tested often by those who know he didn’t play the game. Or is it his own insecurities that make him feels it is necessary to prove himself even when his All-Pro guard meets him in the hallway for a chat?

“I played for coaches that were in your face. Not so much George Allen but Mike Ditka for sure. I always liked playing for him because I think in coaching you need a bit of a fear and respect factor for the head coach.”
Tom Thayer.

610 AM
GH: Ditka was an All-Pro tight end who played with Butkus and against Nitschki. His resume is quite a bit different than that of a college golfer.

“I don’t think it was so much ‘get into it’ as it was ‘stand up to’ (Boldin and Kurt Warner on the Cardinals sideline). I would rather see my assistant coach stand up to a player who is going to show his personality on the sideline to get at least a reflection of his own medicine.”
Tom Thayer,

610 AM
GH: Agreed. I like that Haley barks rather than whimpers.

“Haley is rough on some of the players. …In Haley’s case, and maybe it was because he wasn’t the head cheese, it really didn’t work out.”
Kate Delaney.

610 AM
GH: Interesting that Haley did not have success in Chicago with his tough-guy approach to coaching. He believed in that method though, and now has his own team to run.

“He understands what preparation is all about. I think he’s going to expect a lot out of his assistant coaches and put the effort in himself. I think that will reflect down to the players that we have a head coach who is determined to be successful as brash as he may be, you still have to be prepared.”
Tom Thayer.

“Maybe I’m being a bit cynical but did the (Arizona) team flourish because Todd Haley is such a good coach or because they had such great talent like Larry Fitzgerald and Boldin as well. Was it Haley or was it the talent? I’m not so sure.”
Kate Delaney.

610 AM
GH: No one is going to credit the Chiefs’ talent if Haley wins 10 game this season. Haley is in a perfect spot – win and you’re a genius or lose and you’re simply in the midst of rebuilding a crumbling franchise. But progress will be expected, even in season one.

DALLAS 2004 - 2007
“I am not going to pretend that I knew Todd Haley well when he was here (in Dallas) and I would think that anyone in the local media would say that. That was Todd’s design to a certain degree. Assistant coaches don’t become very prominent in the media simply because Bill Parcells doesn’t let them talk to the media.”
Randy Galloway, of the Ft. Worth Star Telegram and Dallas’ ESPN 103.3.

610 AM
GH: I like Galloway. I have contacted him in the past as a source and he has always been willing to assist, knowledgeable and able to provide entertaining quotes. He did not disappoint here either. Read on.

“Here’s what I liked about him most – he had the guts to stand up to everybody. He was the one coach on this staff, even Parcells, to go face-to-face with Terrell Owens — the biggest rat in football. And if you can do that, I admire you. And he did that.”
Randy Galloway.

610 AM
GH: Maybe Brian Waters should have done his homework before confronting his new head coach. The term “old school” gets tossed around often but I think it fits with Haley. He resembles every coach I ever played for in the ‘70s. If it was 30 years ago, no one would even blink at the tough love he dishes out to his players.

“Todd Haley brings what I think a Bill Parcels brings. What a Jimmy Johnson brings. …I don’t think a Wade Phillips Teddy Bear-like personality works in the NFL. I don’t think it’ll ever work. What Todd Haley brings personality-wise is absolutely what you have to have. And the new general manager in Kansas City agrees.”
Randy Galloway.

610 AM
GH: The Chiefs need to promote a Build-A-Wade Phillips Teddy Bear day at Arrowhead for the Cowboys’ game this season.

“God knows I’d love to see Haley here in Dallas. Haley is the kind of guy who would tell Jerry (Jones) to bleep off.”
Randy Galloway.

610 AM
GH: I told you Galloway was good.

ARIZONA 2007 - 2008

“(Haley) and Ken Whisenhunt are fiercely competitive guys. They used to go play one-on-one basketball games when they were with the Jets and often one of them would have to walk back because they’d get so mad at each other they’d refuse to drive in the car at the same time. They would almost come to fistfights. Whisenhunt wanted a guy like that on his staff.”
Kent Somers, Arizona Republic beat writer for the Cardinals.

610 AM
GH: The Royals could use a guy like that on their staff.

“No question, I think he will get in people’s faces daily. I think the biggest question with Todd is if he can be successful enough, can he control his temper. I think he’s admitted that. He’s very emotional. He will say things to players on the practice field sometimes, he can be very caustic and very cutting and very demanding. Some guys respond to that well and some guys don’t.”
Kent Somers.

610 AM
GH: Haley is a rookie head coach. He is going to screw up repeatedly this season. Let’s hope he limits it more to the practice field than making game-day sideline decisions.

“The over/under on heated discussions between Todd Haley and Curt Warner each game was at least two. They were getting into very spirited discussions coming off the field and then 30 seconds later they were back looking at the satellite photos together.”
Paul Calvisi, Arizona Cardinals sideline reporter.

610 AM
GH: Most guy-fights are like that – a blowup and then over, forgotten. Guys don’t fixate on how a buddy did them wrong – except for maybe Tony Soprano…and the Bloods…and the Crips. Maybe guys aren’t more like women than I thought.

“The flip side of that is that he was very adept at what buttons to push with what players. …He found different ways to motivate Anquan Boldin than how he motivated Larry Fitzgerald.”
Kent Somers.

610 AM
GH: Haley will have more buttons to mash with this team than I have on my three (or is it four?) TV remotes. How does he motivate Larry Johnson, Brian Waters and the many young underperforming members of the Chiefs’ defense? This trait will be tested.

“I think Todd learned here that is important to treat everybody in the organization with respect.”
Kent Somers.

610 AM
GH: That hasn’t been all that evident here in KC. But respect is an earned perk.

“That was more the norm than the exception on the Cardinals sideline. Him and Whisenhunt are very demanding coaches. They not only demand performance, they demand accountability and they demand it now!”
Paul Calvisi, on the video clip of Haley’s famous sideline confrontation with Boldin and Warner,

“That (Arizona) coaching staff still doesn’t get credit for what they did. They changed the culture. They did it by creating competition. They didn’t play favorites. They were demanding of Larry Fitzgerald and Curt Warner.”
Paul Calvisi.

610 AM
GH: Haley and Pioli are busy instituting that competitive culture here in Kansas City. Brian Waters just happened to be the poster boy for that proclamation.

“(Whisenhunt and Haley) are both ultra competitive – almost pathologically competitive. …(The Super Bowl loss) hit him so very hard – maybe harder than anyone on that staff. And it’s because he is so competitive.”
Paul Calvisi,

610 AM
GH: Will losing rip Haley up to the point he cannot function? A great head coach needs to understand that learning to deal with losing is part of becoming a winner. The best salesmen never allow a lost account to cost them their next one. Not every coach learns that basic principle of survival.

“If anybody has the energy for (turning a losing franchise into a Super Bowl team) and the drive for it, I honestly can’t think of anybody better than Todd Haley. And if I could, I’d tell you.”
Paul Calvisi.

610 AM
GH: We are all eager to find out.

I think Todd Haley is exactly they way he is being characterized. I love it. This team needed some damn brass balls in the coaching slot. I dont give a shit. Haley, has balls in today's NFL. That is going to translate on the field my friends. These kids are gonna be ready play.

I think that has been well-established before he came on to Kansas City.

Well, that and he knows how to better his players mentally by tailoring his approach vector to each one's ass before planting his foot squarely between each cheek, yes.

Like I care what some ****ing Arizona Beaker has to say. I live among these people; they're idiots.

Who gives a ****!

The Cardinals best years were with him as OC

FACT

they wouldnt have made a superbowl without him

Almost every star they had on o critisized Haleys play calling and approach to the game until it succeeded and then they all publicly thanked that same approach as a big reason for their success.

I just hope it translates to a few late season wins, because you can surely lose a team that you push so hard if there are no "fruits of the labor".
