DirecTV settles inquiry into marketing practices
DirecTV Group agreed to pay $5 million to 21 states to settle an investigation into the top U.S. satellite television operator's marketing and advertising practices, New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer said Monday.
The company also will pay refunds to thousands of consumers who complained about a variety of problems with their service, Spitzer's office said in a release. The settlement is the culmination of an investigation the state attorney general's office started in March 2003 after getting complaints from customers who could not view certain programs. Some subscribers also complained that programming on DirecTV's Sports Package service was blacked out at times. The company will pay restitution to consumers who were charged a fee for not activating DirecTV in a timely way, did not receive all the local channels they expected to receive or were charged for canceling service before a free programming offer period expired, Spitzer's office said. DirecTV also agreed to disclose in its advertising any additional monthly charges, customer commitments, early termination charges and information about sporting event blackouts, among other things, the statement said. http://news.com.com/DirecTV+settles+...1898&subj=news |
