So another idea the NFL would never do: Make players who are re-signed by their team from the previous year count against the cap at 75% of their standard cap figure. This should increase player retention so fans can actually root for their players and buy their jerseys without worrying about them running off to another team.

Had it been in place last year, the Chiefs would have probably benefitted from not being forced into picking for positional value, since they wouldn't have had the #1 overall pick. I think it's a good thing, anyway. 20. Ravens (8-8, 10-6, 12-4) 30-18 19. Steelers (8-8, 8-8, 12-4) 28-20 18. Falcons (10-6, 13-3, 4-12) 27-21 17. Bears (8-8, 10-6, 8-8) 26-22 16. Giants (9-7, 9-7, 7-9) 25-23 t-15. Cowboys (8-8, 8-8, 8-8) 24-24 t-14. Houston (2-14, 12-4, 10-6) 24-24 13. Cardinals (8-8, 5-11, 10-6) 23-25 t-12. New York Jets (8-8, 6-10, 8-8) 22-26 t-11. Tennessee (7-9, 6-10, 9-7) 22-26 t-10. Lions (10-6, 4-12, 7-9) 21-27 t-9. Miami (6-10, 7-9, 8-8) 21-27 8. Vikings (3-13, 10-6, 5-10-1) 18-29-1 t-7. Redskins (5-11, 10-6, 3-13) 18-30 t-6. Buffalo (6-10, 6-10, 6-10) 18-30 5. Rams (2-14, 7-8-1, 7-9) 16-31-1 4. Bucs (4-12, 7-9, 4-12) 15-33 3. Browns (4-12, 5-11, 4-12) 13-35 2. Oakland (4-12, 4-12, 4-12) 12-36 1. Zach Lowe wrote an entire article about this related to the NBA Draft on Grantland about two weeks ago.

So how would you handle teams that go from 2 years of playoffs to one shitty year? Do you still include the total of 3 years? Basically they just get moved way to the back of the line, i.e. #20?

Correct. Because in theory they're not as bad as a team that has not made the playoffs two years in a row and still has a shitty record.

FWIW, the .5x,1x,2x method gives you this order with weighted average number of wins.
1. Jacksonville 4.667 2. Cleveland 5 3. Chokeland 5.333 4.t Washington 6.333 4.t Houston 6.333 6.t Tampa 6.667 6.t Buffalo 6.667 8. Detroit 7 9. Minnesota 7.167 10. Tennessee 7.667 11. St Loser 8.167 12. Miami 8.667 13. Dallas 9 14.t NYJ 9.167 14.t Arizona 9.167 14.t Atlanta 9.167 17. NYG 9.333 18.t Chicago 10 18.t Pittsburgh 10 20. Baltimore 10.667 |

I can just imagine a scenario where a team has been shit for two years. They've hired a new coach, drafted a few young pieces, and are on the verge. With a few FA moves, they could be a legit wild card contender. Instead of doing that, though, they decide the missing piece is at the top of the next draft, and sign below avg FAs to get to the salary floor, and tank the season in hopes of getting Andrew Luck. It's essentially the same as it is now, but with that extra year. Not a huge problem, but I could see that scenario. |
