Baseball Fans--What is your preferred strategy

Here is my hitting philosophy:

I value speed to bookend the lineups with good baserunners (albeit slower) in the middle

I'd much rather have a guy who can swipe a bag when he gets on and create havoc on the basepaths, than a Reggie Sanders type who is going to crush #4 and #5 pitching during the regular season, and disappear in the playoffs.

I want contact hitters in the 1-2 slots, 6-7 slots so that they can put the ball in play and advance runners in key situations

I'd like to concentrate my power in the 3-4-5 slots, rather than having a lineup chock full of lumbering 25 HR hitters.

I'll sacrifice power in the latter half of the lineup for...

solid defense up the middle of the field---Short, Second, Catcher, and Center Field.

Because of this, I'd also prefer to have groundball style pitchers who throw the "heavy" ball.

I believe in having rookies and young pitchers in the bullpen, as you pay less for them, and they often have much better stuff than veteran retreads.

I would want a good mix of power and speed..

Roll players are essential..you must also have smart/intelligent players who know what to do in each situations..

Perfect example..the 1998 Yankees were one of the smartest teams ever..they always adapted to each situation and adjusted..they had an entire lineup that were great 2 strike hitters

Worst case scenario..the 2006 Yankees were overloaded with sluggers who would swing for the fences at all costs..did not adjust with 2 strike counts and would not take the ball the other way

I agree Hamas.

I love the Mets lineup.
With Reyes, you have the speed and the dynamic lead off man. Lo Duca can make solid contact.

Beltran, Delgado and Wright are your power guys and RBI monsters.

Floyd has seen better days, but he can hit when healthy.

Shawn Green is more of a contact guy this late in his career.

Valentin has been solid all season and can give you some power from the 7 spot.

Endy Chavez has been great as an 8 hitter with speed, average and defense.

I agree with everything you said.

The only thing I don't like about the Mets lineup is that I think they are too susceptible to LHP b/c of the amount of lefties (or switch hitters who hit better as lefties). Their splits against LHP make me think they'll get annihilated by Detroit in the WS b/c of Rogers and Robertson.

I would also say that Valentin is the kind of hitter that scares me in the PS, simply because he's one of those tweener guys who strikes out twice as many times as he walks...

I agree with you about Chavez...he's the kind of player who is immensely more valuable in PS b/c he is a good contact hitter with speed who plays solid D...the Mets are better with him in the lineup than Floyd.

Good point. I think the reason why the Cards won last night is b/c they were able to foul off so many tough 2 strike pitches. IIRC, the cards fouled off 57 pitches last night to the Mets' 17. Their bullpen threw 112 pitches last night as well.

Did the Cardinals lose already?

I think the Cards will beat the Mets in 6 and then become fodder for the Tigers.

I was just projecting their chances against detroit b/c the previous poster mentioned their lineup.

I'm keeping hope alive for the STL.

The Mets pitching could be worse than STL so I think we can take them but Detroit is a steam roller and whoever makes from the NL is just a bump in the road.

Which sucks because I hate the freaking DH so I am a NL guy all the way.

The DH is a joke, it's a huge competitive advantage for the AL, because it allows them to sign players who can still hit but can't run or play defense (Frank Thomas, David Ortiz, the 2007 Barry Bonds, etc.)

Obviously at the AL has a huge advantage in their park b/c their teams are constructed around the concept of a DH (not necessarily built around just the DH). When you go to the NL, the NL teams get no real advantage from the pitcher's hitting ability, and the AL team gets a bat on the bench that is most likely going to be better than any bat the NL team could bring off the bench.

The only things that the NL teams can bank on is that Detroit will have a week to cool off and hopefully they will have already "shot their wad". Given their recent futility, perhaps they may just be "happy to be there" but not likely.

Just like the Yankees were going to roll the Tigers, right?
