High School Football...
Yes, this is a blatant plug for my alma mater Ferndale High in California, but it is a good, short read if you are in to high school football. Championship game of Class A this weekend.
http://www1.pressdemocrat.com/apps/p.../1031/SPORTS01 BOYS NOTES Tiny school just keeps winning big Tuesday, November 29, 2005 By RICH RUPPRECHT THE PRESS DEMOCRAT It was a footnote on Sunday's sports pages: Ferndale High defeated Justin-Siena in a Class A semifinal football game. Maybe it's not that big a deal, but for high school football, that was a colossal upset. An upset until you consider that tiny Ferndale, with an enrollment of 161, churns out championship-quality football teams like USC. "It's got to be one of the best football programs in the state," said Middletown coach Bill Foltmer, whose team lost to the Wildcats in the opening round of the playoffs. Ferndale coach Kim Jorgensen, whose nephew, Tommy, is this year's quarterback, has been known to pull off trick plays almost every game. Against Middletown, it came from deep inside the rule book. On a punt from around the 50 (Foltmer was so aware of the chance of a trick play he kept his first-string defense on the field), the Ferndale punter actually pooched the ball to a blocking back who had moved outside and was still behind the line of scrimmage. He caught the short kick and ran for a first down. "We were all screaming, 'You can't do that,'" said Foltmer. But the high school football rulebook says otherwise. In the win against Justin, a co-ed school of 650, Ferndale successfully ran the fumble-rooski. About 1,500 folks turned out, which isn't bad, considering the Ferndale's population is 700. Ferndale is the No.5 seed and Justin, the defending champ, was No. 1. Jorgensen has been football coach for 15 years, and the Wildcats have been in a section title game in 10 of those. They have won five Class B titles and won the Class A championship against Justin in 2002. On Saturday afternoon, Ferndale and its many followers will be at Miramonte High in Orinda for the Class A championship against Salesian, the No.2 seed. Salesian's enrollment? Try 575. |

It was a credit to our program, in that day, to be scheduled by them. Now, my "little brother", the guy I trained with in the offseason, is starting in the SacJoaquin section semifinals this friday at DT. I wrote a nice thread about it, but when I hit submit, CP server munched it, and I forgot to copy it so it got lost in cyber.
