Need recommendations for a digital camera.

I am in the market for a digital camera and wanted to get some recommendations. I am leaning towards this: http://reviews.cnet.com/Canon_PowerS...-31740583.html

So if you have any experience with this camera or the brand, your comments are appreciated.

I'm a big fan of my Olympus. I don't recall the model type right now, but it takes great pictures and sips batteries at a very low level.

Don't buy an HP camera.

I've had two Canon Powershots, the S110 and the S400. Both took great pictures, but both failed. The S400 managed to delete the pictures on the CF card during a recent family vacation. It now resides in the Pacific Ocean.

I bought an Olympus Stylus 710 to replace it. Been great so far.

Stay away from non-camera manufacturers.

Got an Olympus Stylus 710 to replace my Sony Cybershot. Love the Olympus so far. Of course, I loved my Cybershot, until 2 years into it, the LCD completely crapped out. They said they could fix it for $200. I said no thanks, I'll find a new manufacturer.

Good thing about the Olympus is that it's weatherproof.

Major bad thing is that it has no "manual" viewfinder, so you're stuck with the LCD. This sucks when it's bright out, because it can be difficult to aim shots or review shots in a glaring sun.

My two cents... I own a Fuji F30. It's great in low light situations. Has less noise at ISO 1600 than a lot of cameras do at ISO 400. It actually maxes out at ISO 3200, and you still get decent pictures at that setting, though they can get a little grainy. Half the reason I bought the camera was due to its almost unparallelled low light performance. I can take great quality shots outside late in the day, without using a flash. Poorly lit indoor shots also come out well without using the flash. To me, this is a huge selling point.

The optics on the camera are also very good. People are starting to realize that there is more to digital cameras than finding the most megapixels. Only downside is there is no viewfinder, you have to use the LCD screen. I have never had any problems with this, even taking pictures in broad daylight.

I'd check out the site http://www.dpreview.com if you want an unbiased comparison of cameras. The guy that runs it puts the cameras through a very comprehensive set of tests and looks at cameras for every price range.

I don't have any specific models, but I don't think I know anyone who has used a Canon and wasn't happy with the results.

My first digital camera was a Kodak - not a cheap on either. Terrible pics. Color was fine, but it was a real pain trying to get a pic that wasn't blurry with any consistency at all. (And yes, I did the 2 step button press and only pushed all the way down when the camera was ready).

The one I use now is a Sony. Love it and even though it is a 5.1 megapixel, I have no desire to upgrade it at this point. The only thing I don't like about it is I can't get it to shoot fast enough for action shots of the kids in sports. Those still tend to come out a bit blurry.

We are on our third....and have really liked them. We've had no problems, except wearing them out.

Do you really want to be considered in the same market segment as Dartgod, Utechief?

(Actually, I bought an HP a couple of years ago and it was faulty (i.e, dead). I got it exchanged for a second one that lasted just long enough for me to go on vacation with it, and then it died. When I took it back, the store told me to just buy another brand because the HPs were being returned like crazy. Of course, that was three or four years ago, but I find that grudges grow and flourish if you nurture them properly.)

I got an Olympus c-740 in August of '05. No problems. The 740 has an optical viewfinder as well as the LCD. It was on sale so I sprung an extra $60 for the chip with extra memory, for a total of $320-340 ( I don't remember exactly ). With the extra chip it holds almost 300 fairly high res pics. I love it.

If you're on a budget, it might be worth considering the SD450. It's 5MP instead of 6MP, has the same styling, and I've seen some places lately are clearing them out for less than $200. I'm not sure though if the 600 is a major upgrade over the last generation, or just a little bit better.

I've had an Olympus and now have this Nikon . One of its cool features is built-in WiFi. You can set it to automatically send the images to a computer on a wireless network instead of saving them to the SD card. Its been great so far. I do have a Canon DV camcorder and love it, so you probably would be happy with a Canon camera. I got the Nikon for cheap at Costco.
