Jaworski rates Chiefs QB at No. 20 among NFL starters

Jaworski rates Chiefs QB at No. 20 among NFL starters

The Kansas City Star
Former NFL quarterback-turned-broadcaster Ron Jaworski ranks new Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith No. 20 among the NFL's 32 starting quarterbacks.

That's according to Jaworski's ratings on ESPN's MediaZone site, transcribed from his three-minute daily segments dubbed "Jaws' QB Countdown" on SportsCenter and NFL Live.

Smith, of course, was acquired in a trade from San Francisco this offseason, and has yet to throw a pass in Kansas City (aside from OTAs, that is).

Here are some excerpts from Jaworski's evaluation of Smith:

“A year ago, Smith was coming off his best season in the NFL, having led the 49ers to the NFC Championship. This year, he’s the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs. It was a great move by (Chiefs coach) Andy Reid to acquire Smith.

“The defining element of Smith’s play is efficiency. He executes the offense the way it’s designed, and he makes very few mistakes. Last season – for the second year in a row – he was exceptional on first down. In 2012 he led the NFL in first-down passing, with a quarterback rating of 119. Much of it came off play-action, or in the case of the 49ers, hard run-action out of base personnel. There was no better play-action quarterback last season than Smith. He had a quarterback rating of over 132.

“Smith has been outstanding out of multiple tight end personnel over the last couple of seasons. No quarterback has thrown the ball more with three tight ends on the field. You don’t see that very often in today’s NFL.

“This play was beautifully designed with all three tight ends to the same side. First, look at the impact of the run-action on the two linebackers and the safety. This was hard run-action. Then you see that Delanie Walker’s vertical route occupied the corner. That left Vernon Davis matched on a safety, a safety that initially reacted to run. He had no chance on Davis’ wheel route.

“One area Smith improved in 2012 was in the pre-snap phase of the game. He was much better at the line of scrimmage checking and audibling.

“It will be interesting to see what Andy Reid does in Kansas City. Don’t be surprised if he turns Smith loose a little bit and features an up-tempo offense with an emphasis on quick throws. Remember, Alex Smith played for Urban Meyer at Utah.”

Other QB's that Jaworski has analyzed so far:

No. 32 Matt Flynn

No. 31 Jake Locker

No. 30 Kevin Kolb

No. 29 Chad Henne

No. 28 Mark Sanchez

No. 27 Christian Ponder

No. 26 Brandon Weeden

No. 25 Michael Vick

No. 24 Ryan Tannehill

No. 23 Carson Palmer

No. 22 Sam Bradford

No. 21 Josh Freeman

Look, you and I have gone round and round on this subject. There are two things that Alex Smith does well. he doesn't turn the ball over, and pre snap, there aren't many guys who are better than Alex Smith. Those are just facts. I am going to guess, that you don't watch as many 49er games as I do. Two things were very clear when Kaepernick took over for Alex Smith. Alex Smith was so much better pre snap than anyone knew, and that Kaepernick was a hell of a play extender, and master of the big play. I didn't talk about alex after the snap, ive said many times that if a play doesn't go to script, hes screwed. But as for audibling, changing protections, putting players where they need to be, hes in the tom brady, peyton manning discussion.......FACT

NO, hes not. Its called reading comprehension. Hes a dope who cant understand that there are more parts to being a qb than just throwing the ball.

Me? I'll try and keep it as real as possible. I spend my weeks watching the games over and over, whereas some people just watch once live and then think they know what really happens each play. Ultimately, there will be some that don't care about the truth. But for me, if Alex screws up? I'll have zero trouble in calling him on it... because intellectual dishonesty won't help anything.
On the 49ers forum last year, alex smith threw a back shoulder fade in the preseason to brett swain. It was a touchdown. There was a 40 page discussion about how shitty of a throw it was, even though it was a touchdown. If tom brady, or aaron Rodgers makes that throw. No one gives a shit. it was a touchdown WOW, WHAT A QB. Every single thing alex smith does, will be dissected to the 10000th degree. Its what people who are miserable do.

Well, if its a 5 step drop, and he can fire it where the d told him he thought he should. No, that's how you get 70 percent completion percentage. If the play doesn't go to script, like against the seahawks, and he has more time than he anticipated, he get jittery, and has frank gore pointing at a wide open randy moss, and by the time alex sees it, so has the defense, and he threw a pick.

But, if it goes as drawn up to the x and o. Golden.

He needs to learn to throw the ****ing ball away. He holds the ball too long trying to make something happen.

Throw it away. Let your pro bowl punter kick it and your multiple pro bowlers on defense get it back for you...

As far as a horrible trade- how do you know that? Usually it takes years to find out if a trade pans out or not?

We don't have years with a 30-something game manager. It's a waste of future time and resources.

I don't disagree that he does those two things well (though I am concerned about how well he will do the FIRST when asked to be more aggressive throwing the ball, as Andy Reid has very publicly done).

While those are good skills to have, they are not the most important skills a QB in the NFL needs to have. That's why he's a solid/average/competent NFL QB and not an elite or near-elite NFL QB.

The things I listed are all things that are NICE for a QB to have in his pocket... but not the things that make or break a QB's ability to play QB at a high level in the league.
