I've seen this thrown around on this site and it's just silly. A contender signing a man of his age and caliber to a short term deal is NOT a sign of desperation. it is simply a team signing a stop gap to help the team keep competing at a high level while giving them time to find a long term solution.

As I said in another thread from which I was banned, signing Mathis is the move of a team that considers itself a shoe-in for the play offs, and competing for the Big Enchilada.
That's what said team needed, and that's what Mathis wanted. No rocket surgery required here, folks.
