Nice article about KU's Strength and Conditioning Coach on ESPN.

Jayhawks bulked up, slimmed down for 2013 season

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- It doesn't matter what the weather is like in Kansas. Doesn't matter the time of day, either.

Scott Holsopple will still be wearing sweats on the Jayhawks' practice field.
During their three-week fall camp this month, the strength and conditioning guru for coach Charlie Weis was drenched in sweat under the same sweatsuit, and the reason for the suffering -- he calls it comfortable -- is quite simple: "It lets me know I'm working."

Just the kind of guy you'd want working your football team into shape.

Holsopple said he doesn't remember what made him start wearing sweats every day, but he's done it for 13 years while working at Kansas, Florida, Kentucky and Marquette. It's become routine for him, and routine plays a big role in his philosophy when it comes to strength work.

"This summer it was 107 degrees and he still had on the same outfit," freshman quarterback Montell Cozart said. "We come outside saying it's hot. He says, `What are you talking about? It's freezing out here."

Holsopple could emerge as one of the biggest reasons the Jayhawks win a Big 12 game for the first time in years this season, or improve on the lone victory that they managed in Weis' first year in charge of the program.

When quarterback Jake Heaps steps under center for the season opener Sept. 7 against South Dakota, he'll do so with 12 percent less body fat and 10 more pounds of muscle. Backup quarterback Jordan Darling will be standing on the sideline after dropping 6 percent body fat in two months.

Weis is proud of the progress, too, as evidenced by Holsopple's before-and-after pictures.

"He comes in and shows you two pictures, and it's really disgusting," Weis said. "I'd say if he showed me 80 pictures, 75 of them are just like you can't even believe it's the same kid."

Just about every Kansas player credits Holsopple for helping them develop their bodies during the offseason, especially the freshmen who are on campus for the first time.

Cozart said he added 14 pounds of muscle this summer. Others experienced similar gains. But the biggest success story may have been senior offensive lineman Aslam Sterling, who slimmed down from 368 -- which Weis admits was a generous listing -- to 315 pounds for camp.

"I don't think anybody thinks they're that big until they see the before and after picture," Sterling said. "I look at the pictures now and I feel great about myself."
Holsopple gets results in the way one would expect: hard drills that players hate. But the workouts aren't just about building strength. Holsopple wants them to develop mental toughness as well as learn how to hold each other accountable.

"You can be in great shape and strong, and if you're not together and united and fighting for the same cause, it's not going to matter," he said. "You're going to have a bunch of guys do well individually but no collectively."

Darling said the toughest part of the summer was the early morning workouts.
Holsopple would send players on six 300-yard dashes, then have them push a blocking sled weighed down by 45 pounds on each side back and forth across the field four times. They'd finish by running the Campanile Hill that sits just south of Memorial Stadium a staggering 13 times.

"We started at 5, lifted until 6:30, 6:40, then we're out there running, doing pushups, situps, up-downs, anything he could think of or wanted us to do until that sun rose up," Darling said. "If the sun didn't come up until 2 in the afternoon for some reason he would have kept us out there."

Eventually, getting up so early wasn't so bad. Neither were the workouts. Progress was being made, Darling said, and that's exactly why Holsopple was brought on board last year.

"I think anybody can go through anything one time," Holsopple said. "Things get difficult when you wake up the next morning, it's Groundhog Day, and you've got to go through the whole thing all over again. What makes training camp so tough, why the average person wouldn't be able to make it through, it's not the first day, it's not the second day, it's here we go again."

Teammates sing QB Jake Heaps’ praises

By Matt Tait

Kansas quarterback Jake Heaps gives KU running back/receiver Tony Pierson a pat on his helmet after Pierson scored the first touchdown on Saturday, April 13, 2013 during the KU football spring game. The Blue team defeated the White team, 34-7.

Some of the most frequently asked questions of Kansas University football coach Charlie Weis this offseason centered on his quarterback, Jake Heaps, the junior transfer from BYU who sat out the 2012 season and will start his first game for the Jayhawks nine days from today.

People asked, How has Heaps looked? What kind of leader is he? What are his strengths? What are his weaknesses?

All are valid questions, especially in the wake of last season’s Dayne Crist experiment. But, as was the case with Crist, another former transfer who came to town with a five-star pedigree, Weis’ answers about Heaps often come with a bias.

“I am, obviously, very high on Jake,” Weis said this offseason. “I think Jake is ready to go. I think he’s champing at the bit.”

The mere fact that Weis can acknowledge his fondness for Heaps — something he has for many of his players, past and present — is an indication that even he does not know, definitively, what kind of season Heaps will have. So rather than stand in front of the media or his players and talk about all of the things Heaps can do, Weis encouraged people to check with Heaps’ teammates about all the things he has done since the 2012 season ended and the spotlight for the 2013 season landed squarely on the No. 9 jersey.

His teammates were more than willing to participate.

“Jake’s a great person. Let’s start there,” said junior wide receiver Justin McCay, who, like Heaps, sat out in 2012 and got to know his new quarterback well. “He’s a great person, and he’s a great quarterback, too. I like Jake a lot.”

Asked to explain which of Heaps’ many traits he liked most, McCay pointed to the junior quarterback’s intensity.

“He has that fire in him that you don’t expect,” McCay said. “He’ll get onto you, and he’ll say, ‘Let’s go, let’s do this or do that,’ and you don’t expect it. He looks like a little, laid-back guy, but he’s got a motor.”

Of course, McCay said it was more than just Heaps’ intangibles that lead him to believe he’s in for a big season.

“His arm,” McCay began when asked about Heaps as a thrower. “He’s like 99.99 percent accurate. He puts it on the money every time. If it’s not on the money ... well, it’s always gonna be on the money, so there is no if. He throws a great ball.”

Others who share the huddle with Heaps said his leadership skills set KU’s new quarterback apart.

“I just look at Jake like one word — motivating,” junior tailback Tony Pierson said. “Day in and day out, he’s talkative. He backs it up with his play, and he works hard.”

Added junior tight end Jimmay Mundine, who stood beside Heaps in a leadership role this offseason: “He’s gonna be here first, he’s gonna leave last. He’s gonna work hard. He hates losing. He has everything you want in a quarterback.

“Since I’ve been here, we haven’t had a leader like Jake. We haven’t had a guy whose confidence is that high. He knows what he’s doing. He knows what everybody else is supposed to be doing. He has confidence that he’s gonna get his job done. If you don’t get your job done, he’s gonna let you know, but it’s gonna motivate you to get better. He just makes you better as a player. He really is a good teammate.”

Prodded for examples of ways in which Heaps has motivated his teammates, Pierson offered an unlikely exchange.

“He calls me slow all the time,” said Pierson, whom Weis recently said runs the 40-yard dash in the 4.3-second range. “He knows that’s gonna push my buttons. He’s got it down pat.”

Heaps has not taken on this role to endear himself to his teammates. Sure, that’s an added bonus of the extra effort, but the main goal is winning.
“I think (football) is the ultimate team game,” Heaps said. “You look at different sports, and there are certain guys that can dominate a game, but with football, you really have to have everybody together. If you talk about any winning program, it doesn’t matter if you’re the star player or the last guy on the depth chart, everybody has to have the same mentality and attitude.”

With Heaps leading the way, sometimes that means competing, even where there’s no competition to be had.

“He’s definitely a competitive guy, whether it’s video games, a shoe-tying contest, whatever,” senior running back Taylor Cox said. “Everything the coaches ask him to be, he’s been that and more.”

I think the one thing everyone who watched KU play during the TG era noticed was that the team was universally undersized and out of shape. When Opurum, McDougald, and just a handful of other guys stood out so much you knew there was a problem.

If there's ever been a year where a team could break out, it's this one. There is a legit chance that Heaps is the best QB in the conference, and there isn't a team on the schedule that looks like a world-beater.

I don't think so much this year as next. Lots of juniors on the first team, and a couple of key guys either healing up for next year or becoming eligible next year. 4-5 wins is a hell of an improvement over last year.

Lawrence prohibits couches on front porches

by The Associated Press
9:32 a.m. CDT, August 28, 2013

(LAWRENCE, Kan.)—
Students in Lawrence will no longer be able to hang out on couches on their front porches.

The Lawrence City Commission on Tuesday passed a citywide ban on upholstered furniture on porches, decks and patios. The city says landlords, not tenants, will be fined for violating the ban at rental properties.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports fines will start at $100 per day. However, the city will conduct an educational campaign for several months before the ban is enforced.

The fire department says there had been only 10 fires involving upholstered outdoor furniture since 2007. But Fire Chief Mark Bradford said the furniture burns easily made outdoor furniture dangerous, particularly with the lack of smoke alarms on porches.

That's just stupid. Its dangerous because of a "lack of smoke alarms on porches"? Where do these people come from?
