ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Kansas City Chiefs are breaking training camp in the Andy Reid era for the first time.

The team had their last practice of camp Wednesday. After a planned walk-through on Thursday, they'll head back to Kansas City to prepare for the regular season.

I got a chance to chat with Pro Bowl linebackers Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali before camp broke. The two stars are like virtually every other player on this roster – they rave about playing under Reid.

“I know spirits are high in 31 other places, but we feel great,” Johnson said. “It was a great camp. Great.”

Both veterans pointed out details of Reid’s camp that stood out to them. Johnson said he was amazed that Reid, who came to Kansas City after 14 years in Philadelphia, had the team practice “live” so extensively every day. Often, teams scrimmage near the goal line.

While practice was controlled, Reid wanted his players to simulate game action every day in many different situations. It worked. Several players thought the preseason opener at New Orleans on Friday was slower than usual because they were used to the pace.

“It just puts you in better position to make plays,” Johnson said. “It’s invaluable.”

Hali was impressed by Reid’s schedule. The team had the same routine every day: Practice started at 8:15 a.m., and then players would hit the classroom later in the day. Many NFL teams rotate the daily schedule.

“It gave you a chance to correct your mistakes easier,” Hali said. “It was great to go back and see what we did wrong and then the next day on the field, improve from it … It meant we made less mistakes throughout camp. It’s just the little things that coach Reid does that has made us a better team.”

You do have a point. I'm not going to look up the statistics, but I imagine they don't favor coaches who are on their second teams. There are a few recent notable examples of guys who couldn't win a Super Bowl with their first team but did it on the second try (Belichick, Vermeil, Coughlin, Gruden if you want to count that) but in the course of Super Bowl history I imagine 2nd team coaches aren't any better off than 2nd team QBs.

I like to think that Reid wasn't a lazy hire by Hunt, and that he's not just a Norv Turner or Marty Schottenheimer, but I don't have much to point to him being an exception.

I do like the fact that his last two terrible years with the Eagles had him doing far less coaching than at the beginning of his career. It makes me think this change of duties with the Chiefs is what we need to get the winning Andy Reid back.

It is almost impossible for a coach these days to do much more than coach....


It burned him out pretty quickly.....Jim Johnson when he lost him, I think also set him back, and then when he lost his son, I think that broke him.

Change is good some times.

Also, don't forget Pete Carroll. He was twice a head coach before. he was an absolute disaster. I think it can work the second time around, depending on the situation. And Coughlin is a great example. he got the jags really close, but couldn't finish the deal.

Time will tell with the Reid hire.......but I think it's about as safe as a hire as Clark could have made.

Many in San Diego could have said the same things about Schottenheimer when he went to San Diego (too old, burnt-out, game passed him by, etc.).......but his last 3 seasons in SD were 12-4, 9-7, and 14-2.

I'll take that any day.......dont care who the coach is, or where he came from.

His protege Mike Tomlin drafted Landry Jones. Don't know if that says anything about Cowher or the kind of QB he might have looked to this year.

I can say this, Andy Reid is a damn good coach and is gonna instill confidence and swagger to this roster.

You could this happening in camp with the way he talked with players.

He just has a way about him that I'm having a hard time explaining...but a lot of out "good" players are gonna step up to "very good" quickly and I believe with the age of our roster, that most will continue to ascend under his coaching.

He relates to the players extremely well.

It all depends on your perspective, but Marty was a good retread coach. He obviously knew how to turn dying programs around.

I tend to lean towards this line of thinking.

Let's face it, our last two head coaches were promoted past their level of competence.....which resulted in a clown-car like effect on our team - where we were unprepared, disorganized, and unprofessional.
