Not according to Zouk..... Besides where in the Rooney rule does it state that you cant interview a HC when you have a HC under contract?

Rooney Rule still in play for Chiefs

Posted: Adam Schefter | Adam Schefter | Tags: Kansas City Chiefs, Herm Edwards, Scott Pioli
It hasn’t come up, and it might not. But if it should, here’s the answer to a question that some have posed since the Kansas City Chiefs hired general manager Scott Pioli on Wednesday.

Pioli’s meetings with Chiefs coach Herm Edwards don’t meet the requirements of the Rooney Rule, which mandates that NFL teams interview at least one minority head-coaching candidate.
The interpretation of the Rooney Rule is that teams can’t meet with an incumbent minority for the purpose of creating a vacancy and claim that they have followed the rule. The rule isn’t followed unless a legitimate minority candidate is interviewed.

It’s permissible for Pioli to fire Edwards, but it isn’t permissible for him to hire, say, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz without first interviewing at least one minority head-coaching candidate.

Pioli said Wednesday that he plans to meet with Edwards before making any decisions about whom the Chiefs’ head coach will be. If Pioli retains Edwards, this point is moot. But if Pioli moves in another direction, he and the Chiefs still must comply with the Rooney Rule.

I just don't think the Rooney Rule is going to be a problem. All it requires is an interview, and who says the interview hasn't already occurred. The real question is whether there is mutual interest between Pioli, and Shanahan. If there is, then this will get done. And frankly, I don't put a lot of stock into what Jack Harry says, especially the time frame.

Edit: Here's an easy scenario in which the Rooney Rule becomes irrelevant. Suppose you agree to terms with Mike Shanahan as HC and Romeo Crennel as DC. To satisfy the Rooney Rule, you bring in Crennel, and interview him first, and notify the NFL you interview him for HC, when in reality you didn't, he knows it, and is fine with it.

My view of Pioli's view.

1. BB has the HIGHEST regard for Shanahan. The two of them have obvious, tremendous mutual respect. I would not be surprised if BB considers Shanahan the best HC in the NFL (other than himself, if he's that immodest). That would mean Pioli would want Shanahan.

2. I would think Pioli would be VERY CONCERNED about Shanahan's ability to work FOR someone else. He has run his own show in Denver for a long time. Can he agree to give up control over player acquisitions. Shanahan's own history is what works best in Pioli's favor here, but I imagine before Shanahan gets hired they will have VERY LONG talks about this subject.

3. Pioli no doubt wants the same "mind meld" on players and team building that he had with BB. I'm dubious that he can get that with Shanahan, who is older and been successful, etc., and is more likely to be inflexible.

We'll see. I think Shanahan is a tremendous coach, though I've hated that rat faced jerk for ages now. Shanahan the Coach's worst enemy has been Shanahan the GM. With a good GM...

.

That's why I question whether this will happen, along with how to structure Shanahan's salary so he won't effectively be working for free.

I just find it amusing that the one thing you hear when it comes to Scott Piloi is that he is tight lipped and he is very thorough in his processes.

Yet people (including media members *cough* Jack Harry) fall for water cooler talk.

The Chiefs will have to go through some sort of interviewing process if/when Herm is fired. Even if they go into the process with a front runner when it begins all bets are off.

#2 is my concern...eventually the Rat is going to get fat and happy again and start agitating for control...but Pioli is getting big bucks to handle this, so...

and, honestly, the Rat has made a crap ton of terrible personnel decisions in the last 5-6 years, especially in FA...and in the playoffs, he has been destroyed and humiliated worse than the Chiefs....

i'm worried the guy is just out of good ideas....the only thing that excites me about him is that he will not be afraid to draft a QB....i'd almost say that his hire meant we're gunning for a QB with the #3 pick

i'll warm up to it, but I think Pioli is really going to have to enforce limits with him: "You coach. Period"

Who says it hasn't occured? Probably the fact we aren't supposed to interview people since we already have a head coach?
