Tomatoes and 2,4-D

OK, all you gardeners, I have an issue.

My neighbor's tomato plants have leaves that are curled and the plants don't appear to be growing as they should.

I sprayed for weeds (2,4-D) about three weeks ago when there was no wind and he asked me about that. I said, yes, I did, but I don't see how your plants were affected by my spraying when mine were not. My tomatoes are much closer to the area I was spraying and they're healthy as can be.

Now, come to find out, he planted his tomatoes in the mud about six weeks ago and we had significant rain and cold weather since then. This scenario will also produce curled leaves and slower growth.

As a reference, my plants were within about 20' of where I was spraying, his are more than 100' away. (I was very careful about what I was doing.)

Another issue is he has some plants that are really healthy within the plants that are suffering. It all makes no sense to me.

Any ideas?

Tordon is the bomb on stumps. I don't think it is a nuclear option to a yard though, meaning grasses.

Since it's a grass your options are limited if you don't want to kill other grasses around it. I have used a version of Trimec for crabgrass and I just looked at the jug but it doesn't mention Buffalo grass.

If the Buffalo grass in your yard is limited I'd take something like a cheap paint sponge brush and use Roundup. If you're talking a large area maybe Roundup would be better for the whole area and then replanting grass in late August.

Level of surprise that Hamas is the CP member who literally 'salted the earth': 0.

Thanks, dude.

The Buffalo isn't limited; it is the yard. The problem is that Buffalo is a bit touchy with respect to chemicals, and it's highly conducive to weeds when it's establishing.

Terribly sorry, I misread what you were asking. I thought you were trying to kill it.

2-4-D shouldn't hurt Buffalo grass but read the label before applying. For me, Trimec 2-4-D works best on clover but LV400 Amine is cheaper. I usually mix it half and half when spraying broadleaf's. Each uses a different form of salt. Or something.

We were in severe drought last year and my 15 year old tall Fescue yard gotten beaten bad. I replanted in late April and have a good young grass field. The broadleaf's were coming in bad so I hit them with this mixture last Monday. The weeds are dead and it didn't appear to hurt the new fescue.

No problem. Thanks a bunch of the thoughts and information. I shall follow-up on the above.

Careful with Tordon, it has a "half life" of about 36 weeks. Meaning that it sticks around in your yard or soil for 36 weeks. That is wicked shit.

Depends on what you want to do. Primatol will sterilize the ground for 12-18 months. Paraquat will burn down everything in 24 hours.

Tordon is mean shit. 2-4D is actually labeled for stumps too.

2-4D at lower rates should be OK. If you can get metrasylfuron (Ally) it won't hurt buffalo.

In the early spring if you can get your mits on some atrazine, pair it with glyphosate and some banvel you'll do yourself a lot of good until late July probably. We run that with our ground rig so we get the rates right but it works well.
