LSUSAINT's 2007 draft preview

1. Buffalo Bills-Brady Quinn, QB, Notre Dame
   J.P. Losman is not the answer at quarterback for the Bills if they are picking first in the 2007 NFL Draft. The Bills could go in a different direction with the new coaching staff under Dick Jauron. Quinn is a franchise caliber quarterback who could step in immediately. The question arises, who would you rather have, Brady Quinn or J.P. Losman? I know my answer.
2. San Francisco 49ers-Adrian Peterson, RB, Oklahoma*
   It’s a tough choice between Peterson and wide receiver Calvin Johnson of Georgia Tech. With Norv Turner as offensive coordinator and the 49ers taking three wide receivers in the 2006 NFL Draft, the 49ers take Peterson over Johnson.
3. New York Jets-Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech
   The Jets have Kellen Clemens waiting in the wing at the quarterback position. Clemens and Johnson could be a deadly combo for years to come.
4. Oakland Raiders-Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson
   Defensive ends are a premium in the NFL, especially ends with Adams’ ability. Adams would line up opposite Derrick Burgess to develop a frightening duo at defensive end.
5. Tennessee Titans- Joe Thomas, OT, Wisconsin
   This may not be the sexiest pick but Thomas has the potential to be an All-Pro offensive tackle. Protecting Vince Young’s blindside is priceless. Thomas is coming off knee surgery but should return to his dominant self.
6. Green Bay Packers-Marshawn Lynch, RB, California*
   Ahman Green will be a free agent in 2007 and Samkon Gado is not a franchise running back. Lynch would be a great addition to the Packers’ backfield no matter who lines up at quarterback in 2007.
7. Detroit Lions-Brian Brohm, QB, Louisville*
   The Lions take a quarterback for Mike Martz to groom. Brohm is an elite prospect who is well coached at Louisville. Lions' fans hope Brohm pans out better then the last quarterback they took in the first round, Joey Harrington.
8. San Diego Chargers-Dwayne Jarrett, WR, Southern California*
   Philip Rivers is still a young quarterback with limited weapons. Add Jarrett with Antonio Gates and the Chargers have a deadly receiving core.
9. Houston Texans-LaRon Landry, S, Louisiana State
   The Texans lack a true playmaker at the safety position. Landry has the ability to play either free or strong safety. He would instantly make an impact at safety for the Texans
10. Cleveland Browns-Adam Carriker, DE, Nebraska
    The Browns have a huge hole at defensive end in their 3-4 defense. Carriker is a big body at 6-6 280 and would be a perfect fit.
11. New Orleans Saints-Patrick Willis, LB, Ole Miss
    The Saints have lacked a true middle linebacker for some time. Willis is a smart, instinctive football player that would fill a huge need for the Saints.
12. St. Louis Rams-Ted Ginn Jr., WR, Ohio State*
    Issac Bruce is on the last leg of his career. Ginn is a superb athlete and would bring back the title of “The Greatest Show on Turf.”
13. Kansas City Chiefs-Sidney Rice, WR, South Carolina*
    The Chiefs have lacked a true #1 wide receiver for a long time. Rice has the potential to develop into that wide receiver.
14. Minnesota Vikings-Paul Posluszny, LB, Penn State
    The Vikings take best player available with Posluszny on the board. Posluszny and 2006 first round pick Chad Greenway will form a fierce duo for the next decade.
15. Baltimore Ravens-Lawrence Jackson, DE, Southern California*
    The Ravens continue to improve their defense by taking the talented Jackson. Jackson is a gangly prospect that excels in getting after the quarterback. Jarret Johnson will be a free agent in 2007 and Trevor Pryce will be 31 by the start of the 2007 season.
16. Arizona Cardinals-Brandon Meriweather, S, Miami (FL)
    Robert Giriffith will be 36 at the end of 2006 and will be a prime candidate to retire. Meriweather would provide great depth for an area of need and could start in 2007 if Griffith does indeed retire.
17. Dallas Cowboys-Drew Stanton, QB, Michigan State
    Drew Bledsoe will be 35 in 2007. Stanton will be groomed as the quarterback of the future.
18. Atlanta Falcons-Frank Okam, DT, Texas*
    The Falcons lack a presence at nose tackle next to Pro Bowler Rod Coleman. Okam would play next to Coleman and give the Falcons their run stuffing nose tackle they’ve been coveting.
19. Philadelphia Eagles-Jeff Samardzija, WR, Notre Dame
    The Eagles have some young wide receivers in Reggie Brown, Jabar Gaffney, Jason Avant, and Jeremy Bloom but none of them are a true #1 wide receiver. Samardzija would give the Eagles a great young receiving core with loads of talent. Brown and Samardzija would be a great one-two punch for many years.
20. Jacksonville Jaguars-Justin Blalock, OT/OG, Texas
    Blalock is a versatile offensive lineman that projects as an offensive guard but could play right tackle. Vince Manuwai will be a free agent in 2007 and Blalock could fill his position or if nothing else, provie great depth.
21. Tampa Bay Buccaneers-Tim Crowder, DE, Texas
    The Buccaneers have a very productive and fearful defensive end in Simeon Rice. However, the Buccaneers have no one else opposite Rice to strike fear into the opposing offense. By taking Crowder, the Bucs hope they find the perfect complement to Rice at defensive end. Tampa Bay could go with an outside linebacker here but Crowder is the best value.
22. Indianapolis Colts-Sam Baker, OT, Southern California*
    The Colts take Baker to add depth and to replace Tarik Glenn once he is cut or retires.
23. Cincinnati Bengals-Quentin Moses, DE, Georgia
    The Bengals lack a pass rushing threat from the defensive end position opposite Justin Smith. The Bengals take another former Bulldog to help solve the problem. Also, Smith will be a free agent in 2007 and might not be back.
24. New York Giants-Daymeion Hughes, CB, California
    Hughes is a talented defensive back and provides depth to the Giants secondary. He would back up Sam Madison and replace him once he is gone. Second year cornerback Corey Webster and Hughes could develop into a lockdown tandem.
25. Miami Dolphins-H.B. Blades, LB, Pittsburgh
    With the Dolphins possibly planning on switching to a 3-4 defense full-time, the Dolphins' front office takes Blades. Blades can backup Zach Thomas, push for time at outside linebacker in the 4-3 defense, or start next to Thomas as an inside linebacker in the 3-4 defense. Either way, Blades would be a great addition to the Dolphins' defense.
26. Carolina Panthers-Tom Zbikowski, S, Notre Dame*
    Mike Minter is getting old and Zbikowski can eventually replace Minter.
27. Washington Redskins-Dan Bazuin, DE, Central Michigan
    Bazuin is a natural pass rusher who finished second in the nation in total sacks and first in the nation in tackles for loss in 2005. Bazuin would instantly upgrade Washington’s pass rush.
28. Pittsburgh Steelers-Michael Bush, RB, Louisville
    The Steelers are ecstatic Bush has fallen into their laps. Bush is a big running back that will complement Willie Parker perfectly.
29. Seattle Seahawks-Levi Brown, OT, Penn State
    With no glaring holes the Seahawks take the best player available in Brown. Brown can play either tackle position. Tom Ashworth can move to guard and Brown could play right tackle or Brown could play some guard if Ashworth sticks at right tackle. Either way the Seahawks get a great player who will push for playing time.
30. Denver Broncos-Michael Griffin, S, Texas
    John Lynch isn’t getting any younger and is close to retirement. Griffin is a versatile safety who will eventually replace Lynch.
31. Chicago Bears-Greg Olsen, TE, Miami (FL)*
    The Bears have a great defense but it’s time to address the offense. Olsen would finally give the Bears a presence at tight end and whoever is at quarterback in 2007 another option to throw to, especially in the red zone.
32. New England Patriots-Antoine Cason, CB, Arizona*
    The Patriots have some very good young corners in Ellis Hobbs, Asante Samuel, and Randall Gay but none of them are a true #1 cornerback. Cason benefits from great coaching at Arizona under head coach Mike Stoops and has the potential to be a lockdown cornerback.

I'd be perfectly fine with a WR next year. Although picking thirteenth isn't what I had in mind.
