Been thinking about buying a new vacuum that picks up pet hair. Kitties are shedding everywhere. I'm checking out the Dyson DC41 Bagless Animal model. It sells anywhere from $500 to $650 depending on the seller. Anybody have experience with Dyson, and are they worth the extra money? You can buy a Hoover or Bissel for around $300 to $400. Thoughts?

I've got a DC14 that's a few years old. I can't speak to its quality above other higher-end vacuums, but I can tell you that it was frightening how much shit it dragged out of our carpet the first time that our old ($100) vacuum had left behind. We've got two cats, and it seems to do a reasonable job at it.

That said, the Consumer Reports chart above is probably a more objective comparison than my one-vacuum experience.

My dog was furminated at boarding prior to pick up. Damn, hardly any shedding now. I need to get one myself. Would recommend

Bought one of the original models in 2004. Still going strong. Had to replace the extension hose at one point as it got worn from stretching all the way up the staircase and cracked at one of the seams but the motor runs like a champ and it picks up everything in sight. It's weakness is fine particles like sugar or flour. Use a dustpan and brush.

yep. works pretty well. we try to comb through our dogs fairly often.

except for our new dog. her hair is very short, almost like a doberman.

The smaller dyson (apartment sized) we had was very crappily built and seemed "chincee". Crapped out after a couple years, and we happily got a new brand. The Shark lift-a-way from the CR review. It works great.

Dyson's are awesome, well worth the extra money IMO. I have a first gen dyson and I have had in not for 5plus years, awesome machine. Easy to clean, cleans extremely well and very, very durable.

I've also looked at Simplicity Vacuums. Their top end stuff is crazy expensive. $1400 for a vacuum cleaner. Wow, you could buy a beat up used F-150 pickup truck for that kind of scratch! Of course, you can't clean your rugs with an F-150 pickup truck....
