Chiefs notes: Moeaki has a big night

Moeaki has a big night

Tight end Tony Moeaki had no problems in his most high-profile practice since becoming a pro.

The rookie from the University of Iowa made several tough catches during Wednesday’s night practice, making a couple grabs in the end zone.

After nearly one week at training camp, Moeaki is someone who has looked sharp. Still, coach Todd Haley said the tight ends and wide receivers are expected to improve.

“Tony is just like the rest of this rookie group,” Haley said, “and I’m encouraged by each and every one of them and I’m hoping that each and every one of them can come in here and help us be a better football team.”

Chiefs close morning practice

Kansas City held practice for a second time inside the Griffon Indoor Sports Complex, closing the morning session to fans and reporters.

Haley said Wednesday afternoon that the workout was a reward for players, who had been through seven “good practices outdoors in pretty good temperatures.” The Chiefs held an evening practice, which was open, at Spratt Stadium on the Missouri Western State campus.

“I just thought it was the best thing for the guys in order to have them ready for tonight,” Haley said. “That’s one of the tough parts of my job is to manage these guys and keep them in a position where we feel like we’re getting all the work we need done and at the same time, keep them physically ready to keep going to make it through this process.”

Haley said the morning session was a walk-through, which means the team can shut out all media members from practice. But Kendrick Lewis said it was a regular practice, at regular intensity.

“It was practice,” Lewis said. “Nice little practice. Nice solid practice.”

Lewis was asked if it was any lighter than an ordinary workout.

“Nah,” Lewis said. “No lighter.”

What you need to know about …

THE OFFENSE
The wide receivers routinely had no problem with the cornerbacks during one-on-one drills, with Chris Chambers hauling in several deep passes against Brandon Carr near the end zone. … Rookie wideout Dexter McCluster had another long catch after beating Maurice Leggett on a deep route. McCluster also hauled in a deep pass against Leggett during 11-on-11 drills.

THE DEFENSE
Kansas City’s cornerbacks had a long night, and Carr perhaps had the longest. He continued what is shaping into an unimpressive camp for the third-year defensive back. But rookie safety Kendrick Lewis looked ahead of the rookie curve, knocking away a pass from Brodie Croyle, then deflecting another a few plays later. … Second-year defensive back Donald Washington intercepted a tipped ball in skeleton drills.

INJURY REPORT
Running back Thomas Jones joined guard Brian Waters in the conditioning area. Jones wore a jersey and shorts, but he didn’t wear full pads like most of his teammates. Fullback Tervaris Johnson was carted off the field following practice with ice on his right leg.

DAILY BATTLE

Tension is increasing at cornerback after Carr’s early struggles. Carr had a terrific offseason, but his slow start in camp has been difficult to overlook. Rookie corner Javier Arenas has looked sharp, and so has Leggett. Carr, who hurried to break up a pass after being beaten off the snap, needs to become more consistent if he is to keep his job.

TODAY’S SCHEDULE
The Chiefs will practice at 1:50 p.m.
