Mellinger: One play symbolizes the Chiefs’ lost season

Quote:
To recap: The Chiefs have lost four games by 16 points or more, must decide between a bad quarterback coming off a concussion or a worse quarterback who isn’t, and are surrounded by clown-show storylines like a right tackle going on a misguided rant against the fans and a GM who apparently has precious little support from the owner.

If you want to throw up, now’s a good time, because our story is about to get even more sickening and disgusting.

After it was all over, a blowout loss to a franchise that won just one of its previous 14 games, Crennel said one of the worst things an NFL coach can say. He said he didn’t understand why the Chiefs played so bad.

That’s at least the second time Crennel has said as much after a blowout loss, and barring a series of miracles on the level of unicorns cooking your dinner tonight, those words will come to define his time in Kansas City the same way that never-say-it-can’t-get-worse line defines Buddy Bell’s.

I don't think that has anything to do with it.

He was never a good motivator. Very good coach. But never a good head coach. I like Romeo in that he apparently works very hard, cares a lot about football, and players seem to love him. But he's not cut out for head coaching. And shame on a GM who wasn't smart enough to see that.

I think Quinn is better than Cassel. His first start since 2009 and he looked as good as Cassel has the last 4 years. The INTs werent really his fault were they? I mean, don't get me wrong. He sucks. But at this point I hope they go with Cassel. Yes I said I think Quinn is better but hope they stick with Cassel. You can figure that out on your own.

I'm guessing Tuesday the news will come down.

Clark will sheepishly admit his mistake in front of the media.

Pioli will slink out of town with a sack of Hunt money, cackling and rolling a blunt, with a tied up Chiefs cheerleader in his trunk.

If we're lucky we'll get a shame pic ala Josh McDaniels.

It's a shame that we're going to lose Crennel completely because he's one helluva d-coordinator. Probably the shittiest head coach in KC history but man, he can coach a defense though.

This whole experiment will take years to recover from, I'm afraid. They have talent now but by the time everyone learns another new system, the new QB gets settled and they get into a groove, half the quality players we have now will either retire or move on.

Life as a KC sports fan, ain't it great?

I don't think Pioli gets fired during the year. Crennel maybe.

Can't say I agree. I want them ALL gone. Romeo, Pioli, Carthon, DaBoll...ALL of them. Clean the stink out of this bitch once and for all.

Crennel used to be a pretty good DC.

He sucks now.

He sucked last year.

He sucked in '10

It doesn't make sense, though.

He can field an attacking defense that can nullify a good quarterback. He's done it ... many times. We've seen it.

Maybe he's just stubborn?

He's a relic that believes that attacking can lead to a defense giving up big plays.

And he's absolutely right.

But in today's NFL, you can't win if you sit back and wait.

I dunno... They had the 16th ranked defense in 2010. Last year without Berry they still had a decent defense with no one to really rush the qb except Hali. He's better than anything ****ing else we've seen here since the early 90's.

That's the thing ... it's not that he can't do it. He just won't.

He has the horses (assuming the defensive backfield is relatively intact) to have a very disruptive defense. He stays with his 'bend don't break' philosophy, though ... in spite of the fact that we just get eaten alive in small pieces while wearing down. An attacking defense, at least, might force a mistake and actually make a play once in a while that can change a game in our favor.

I get that his philosophy is dated, but he's done better in the past. I've seen it with my own, two eyes. It's very strange. Maybe the HC duties?

16th ranked defense against one of the easiest schedules you'll ever see.

And last year, this D sucked through most of the first half of the season, then he started becoming more aggressive and good things happened.

Then the moron reverted to a soft bend but don't break scheme this, and we are consistently getting our asses handed to us.
