Billiards catch all thread...tips, suggestions for a n00b

So recently after playing quite a bit at my work on breaks and what not I've decided to take up billiards pretty seriously...want to get good at it.

Love playing 9 Ball, it's my game of choice....just looking for any good suggestions, tips, etc. on getting better and transitioning from a complete nothing to a decent to good player.

Also looking for suggestions on some good equipment...mainly cues. I have no idea when it comes to billiard equip. so any good shouts I will take.

Probably going to invest in a table after the beginning of the year, assume the main way to get better is just playing a lot and repartition.

Figured this could be a thread to discuss all things billiards too, couldn't find one when I searched...

Long shots are my big issue right now...my break is pretty decent.

Trying to kill it is generally ok on breaks, but I love the people who can't strike correctly and the cue ball goes flying off the table 90% of the time.

Well yeah obviously on breaks. I'm talking about people that kill it every time and have no concept of shooting position.

This.

And a well played safety is 10x better than some three rail crazy kick shot.

And practice. Like anything, it's about knowing how to execute, and you learn how to execute by having been in the spot before.

And play people that are better than you. Playing shitty players all the time will make you develop bad habits.

never break with your personal cue or buy a heavier one specifically for breaking. English, if you know how to use it, can help you do a better job setting up your next shots. If you don't it will bite you on the ass from time to time.

For leaning english and ball placement, play carem games (on the table w/o pockets).

plan ahead, play good d.

Your breakroom has a pool billiards table? Or do you run over to a bar?

If TV has taught me anything it is that if you are good, you have to wear a tuxedo when you play. That's the main reason I decided not to get great at it.

Just go to the ChiefsPlanet Arcade and play the Billiards game. The realistic feel of the game will give you an edge on all of your future opponents.

Yes, the imaginary edge is always best. Go with this.

LOL sounds like a plan...

For 9 Ball players what do you find as the most effective break? Slightly angled or right off the side rail just off the second dot?
