****Official 2013-14 Missouri Tiger Football Repository Thread****

We have two things to look forward to this year:

1) The potential beginning of the Maty Mauk Era. Mauk represents the best chance for this program to get back to a level of respectability after horrendous QB play cost us multiple games last year.

2) The last year of the Gary Pinkel era. Pinkel's entrenched cronyism won't play in a conference this competitive, especially if he couples his abysmal gameday coaching with lackadaisical, worst-in-conference recruiting. Pinkel was the formerly adequate meal that has now turned into a four pound bowel obstruction. It's time to jam a Fleet's enema up our collective asses.

Here is the schedule. We dodge Alabama, LSU, and Arkansas in the west and the Non-con is decidedly weaker than years past.

8/31: Murray State
9/7: Toledo
9/21: @ Indiana
9/28: Arkansas State
10/5:@ Vanderbilt
10/12: @ Georgia
10/19:Florida
10/26: South Carolina
11/2:Tennessee
11/9: @ Kentucky
11/23: @ Ole Miss
11/30: aTm

Looks like 6-6. Undefeated in non-con, 2-6 in league play.

I will eventually update the OP with a list of high profile in-state recruits that decide to go elsewhere after a half-assed attempt to gain their services. The inevitable cavalcade of *** rejects, skeezers, skanks, and scalliwags we get will fill out the ranks.

Razors, cyanide capsules, and Jonestown Kool-Aid are available in the break room. Second door on the left.

Since every Mizzou thread eventually dies of AIDS, I recommend starting anti-retroviral therapy immediately. I believe Walgreens covers Express Scripts.

Premium In-State Players:

Roderick Johnson: **** OT, Florissant, MO.
Monte Harrison: **** WR, Lee's Summit, MO.
Jimmy Swain: **** LB, Lee's Summit, MO

Commitment List: From to and possibly

Spoiler!

Mizzou blows out Vandy, which is nice. But what’s now possible is nicer
By SAM MELLINGER
The Kansas City Star

I mean, all of a sudden, Mizzou’s game at Georgia next week looks a little different, huh?

Missouri beat the bejeezus out of Vanderbilt here on Saturday, 51-28, pushing the Tigers to 5-0 and (presumably) into this week’s top 25s. The Tigers’ third SEC win since joining the league last year is their most impressive, and the morale around the program has to be as high as it’s been in a while.

They’ve already matched last year’s win total, and next weekend’s game at No. 5 Georgia has a new tint.

"I don't think we've played our best game yet," Mizzou coach Gary Pinkel says. "So that's good. I think they know that, too. We can certainly improve as a team."

Georgia needed overtime to beat Tennessee, and it’s tempting to see Tennessee and Vanderbilt at about the same level. College Football Reference’s Simple Rating System, for instance, ranked Tennessee 34th and Vanderbilt 40th entering the weekend. Jerry Palm’s projected BCS standings had Tennessee 53rd and Vanderbilt 63rd. Mizzou, if you’re curious, was 11th in SRS and 23rd with Palm.

Whatever. We’ll know soon enough how Mizzou stacks against Georgia, and, obviously, the Tigers will need to play their best game of the season to have a chance against one of the top teams in the country on the road.

But, as people have pointed out, beating Vanderbilt (especially in a blowout) gives Mizzou the chance to play for a great season instead of a good one.

Along with Florida-LSU, Oregon-Washington, and Texas A&M-Ole Miss, Missouri will be playing in one of college football’s showcase games next weekend.

This is the kind of thing that had so many MU fans excited about joining the SEC.

Mizzou in the top 25. I'll enjoy that while it lasts (probably just the one week).

In addition to Mitchell, Georgia will be without Michael Benntett (the white receiver who killed Mizzou last year out of the slot) and Justin Scott-Wesley. That's three of its top 4 receivers out.

Murray won't exactly be working with a full deck, and Missouri won't face a receiver who is as dynamic as Jordan Matthews (not even close).
Here is the link to a story on the injury status for the above people....we will be catching Georgia with several key players watching the game from the bench.

It was real nice seeing a solid game of FGs from our kicker. That guy has been making me nervous.

That was huge. His kickoffs are great. If he can get some confidence going, that would really help.

Georgia's injuries at the skill positions right now resemble Missouri's injuries on the OL last year, when 8/10 on the two deep missed significant time (and three had season-ending injuries).

Top two RBs out, one for the season.

Three WRs out for the season. A few more injured/unlikely to play.

Know how that feels. It sucks.

Gives Missouri a shot on Saturday and makes the whole game very interesting!

I'm quietly intrigued by what this squad could do.

Vandy's not a good team, but they were getting a little buzz this year. James Franklin was the new hot item at HC, Jordan Matthews was looking to set records and they looked like a team that could quietly get to a 7 win season, 8 if they got a break or two.

And Mizzou friggen housed 'em. I was in Nashville for both games and really, Mizzou just kinda toyed with Vandy. I really hated seeing the defense dial it down like they did, but ultimately that's just kinda what Pinkel does. And hell, Matthews made us look bad which he'll do to pretty much everybody.

That was a really really good win. That's the kind of win a team that can sneak up and knock off a Georgia, SC or Florida plays. Ultimately, I think we win one of those 3, Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi. If they can do that they'd have a signature win, a couple of quality road Ws and a nice record. That's a hell of a season.

I've watched all of Mizzou's games and most of Georgia's. This game looks like a toss-up to me. If we win this one, the East is in play.

Also, there was a Vegas odds maker on the radio the other day who said that Mizzou will be a slight favorite against Florida.

I think playing FL at home gives us a shot with them....and catching GA at this time with the injuries gives us a shot of winning. South Carolina worries me because Connor Shaw could carve up our defense if he is on. The one interesting point for SC is that Jadaveon Clowney appears to be a bit of a head case this year. Some are blaming it on what he saw happen with Lattimore last year and how it ruined his chances in the NFL.

All I know is that we have all the right opportunities to make this a good season in the SEC.

No matter what the odds makers say, MU needs to play like they are underdogs in every game.

I'm not convinced Shaw is quite as good as our memory of him.

Sure, he absolutely detonated us last year, but I watched him in a handful of other games and wasn't amazed by him.

Do we overrate Shaw a little bit because of what he did to us? And if you'll recall, the two teams on either side of the SC game also had QBs that hit grooves where they threw 90% or so for a half. The secondary just did a piss-poor job last season.

Unfortunately the coaching staff is the same there and I'm not sure the talent's much different. In the end, perhaps it'll happen again but I don't think it's because Shaw is a stud.

We called the same game against SC last year that we called against Arkansas State this year. Shaw is good enough to play pitch and catch all day long if you let him...and we did.

Maybe playing a team like Vanderbilt that has a stud WR forced us to change up our scheme. Hopefully we don't revert back to playing nothing but our base D going forward (which we did in 3 of our 4 non-cons). Our D-Line is really starting to show that they can collapse the pocket if our Corners play near the LOS.

If we get beat over the top, so be it. That's the price you pay sometimes for not letting them have 20 straight 8-10 yard completions.

Missouri seems to have the weekly Southeastern Conference defensive lineman of the week award on lockdown.

Tigers senior Michael Sam won the award Monday for the second consecutive week and is Missouri’s fourth winner this season.
Sam notched three sacks for the second consecutive game Saturday during a 51-28 win at Vanderbilt. He finished with five total tackles.
Of the 16 three-sack games in the NCAA this season, Sam is the only player to own two such games. He leads the SEC in sacks (six) and tackles for a loss (10).
Sam is the first Missouri defensive player to win a weekly conference award twice in the same season since safety Pig Brown won the Big 12 defensive player of the week twice in 2007.
The only game in which the Tigers didn’t produce the SEC defensive lineman of the week was the season opener Aug. 31. Markus Golden won the award against Toledo and Kony Ealy won it against Indiana before Sam’s back-to-back wins.
MU-Florida game to air on KSMO in KC area
Despite a glossy 5-0 record, CBS and ESPN passed over Missouri’s home game against Florida on Oct. 19. The game will kick off at 11:21 a.m. and will be broadcast on KSMO (Channel 62) in the Kansas City area.
CBS selected Georgia at Vanderbilt and Auburn at Texas A&M, while South Carolina at Tennessee landed on ESPN in the morning with Arkansas at Alabama and LSU on Mississippi on ESPN or ESPN 2 in the evening.
