Miami's Martin leaves team after 'emotional breakdown'

Jonathan Martin leaves Dolphins after 'breakdown'

By Dan Hanzus
Around the League Writer
Published: Oct. 30, 2013 at 06:39 p.m. Updated: Oct. 30, 2013 at 07:00 p.m.
An unusual situation is unfolding in Miami, where Dolphins right tackle Jonathan Martin has left the team after suffering an "emotional breakdown" this week.

NFL Media's Jeff Darlington reported Wednesday that Martin is currently seeking help with his family after an incident at the team's cafeteria, according to team sources.

Martin is listed on the team's injury report with an illness, and is doubtful to play Thursday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Fox NFL insider Jay Glazer reported that Martin was the victim of a prank at the cafeteria, becoming enraged enough to "smash his food tray on the ground."

The second-year pro has not been with the team since that time. Darlington reports that Martin immediately sought treatment at a local hospital. He has since left the hospital and is now spending time with his family, according to team sources.

Martin opened the season as the Dolphins' replacement for Jake Long at left tackle. He was moved to right tackle when the team acquired Bryant McKinnie via trade last week. Tyson Clabo is expected to start in Martin's place on Thursday.

There are mountains of objective evidence supporting that. I'm comfortable with my conclusions on that issue.

That maybe SOP in the locker room but you can't have your boss telling an employee to physically hit another employee. That is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

This story just gets more and more confusing. Dan Patrick had a beat reporter from the Miami Herald on who's been covering it and he had some new info that surprised me... specifically:

1. The VM transcript we got was incomplete. There's an ending where Incognito's voice changes, like he's changing character, and he says "call me." Like it was a gag. And the VM was kept by Martin and played by him in the locker room as part of a running joke.

2. These two were BESTIES. Traveled together, partied together, had pictures taken together. Very homoerotic vibe I'm getting.

3. Right before he left the team, Martin got in a scuffle with a defensive tackle, and it was Incognito who jumped to his defense.

Listen starting around 13 minutes in.

Yeah imma go with Martin cracked under the pressure of his own failure and the pressure of the coaches. Incognito was a scapegoat.

Cracked under pressure or has huge mental issue? It's hard to believe that all of this buddy-buddy shit was going on....he snapped and no one talked to him and told him how it's going to look when all of this comes out.

Haven't you ever known someone like that, though? You think they're one way and then one day you find out they're not?
I have.

I think there may be a gay lover jilted issue going on here. Incognito dumped Martin for another OL and Martin is now jealous and angry.

It fits the scenario perfect. We should probably get Clay's take on this since he would be the expert on this subject matter.

So I am watching fight night last night for our troops and after that Fox sports comes on. They start talking about the Martin case. They first give you as much information as they can about what was actually going on by interviewing a bunch of Dolphins players. Next they have a panel of athletes set up to educate the public on what a locker room atmosphere is actually like and the nature of relationships of the athletes inside of it. Gary Payton readily admitted that he let one of his white brothers call him the N word. I think this is important because the average douche has never been in that atmosphere has no idea what it is actually like. We also find out these two were like Mutt and Jeff before this incident. Next I switch over to ESPN where they are about to do their take on the story. What did we get, three very angry black athletes condemning Incognito. With all of the new facts coming out they chose to withhold all of it in favor of showing us how outraged we should be. They lacked any and all objectivity and were completely committed to their own madness. I guess if politics was ever going to enter the sports arena we know exactly where ESPN stands with the rehiring of Olbermann. It reminded me of CP and people in general where the vast majority feel justified in playing judge, jury and executioner with even the smallest amount of evidence and rush to judgment. (Remember Kobe?) Even when a preponderance of evidence mounts against their judgment they are diligent at staying the course like they have some investment in it. For a lack of a better term I will call it being self-righteous in your own stupidity. What’s even more humorous is this kind of persons mantra is constantly acting like they are more intelligent than the people who are objective around them. My 2 cents.

That's the thing, to me. If someone took voice mail and texts that I've sent for my closest friends out of context they'd think we hated each other.
I almost always answer, "What's up asshole?" when they call.
The thing that's odd though is that if you were actually close friends you'd think you'd have an understanding where a guy's line was, and whether he wasn't really down.

Maybe Martin just pretended not to mind hoping people would lay off - that happens to people being harassed.
Or maybe Martin just was under stress from playing in the NFL and mentally broke. It's hard to tell.

They're called sheep and I agree 100%.

Always looking to be outraged about something and too scared to think for themselves despite a lifetime of experience of how the game works.

Maybe it's all part of Martins plan. Drag Incognito's name through the mud, suspend him, ruin his career, financially break him, then in 3 years call him
"Gotcha lulz. I've been preparing that prank for years. Anyway, let's hook up and get some Quiznos"

That would be the best prank ever, right up there behind JFK's "Bet you thought I got shot" deal that he'll eventually reveal.
