But Sutton et al has to realize they need a third string NT to keep Poe fresh and safeguard against any injuries or shit play from the DEs.
We would get the same effect by keeping two NTs in Poe and Howard/Grissom. Again, there is no way the Chiefs activate 3 NTs on gameday. If you keep a 3rd guy it's because he shows a lot of promise and is worth keeping around on the roster for next year. Personally, I don't find Grissom to be that guy, and certainly not Howard, who has already had that chance last year.

MAYBE the Chiefs keep Howard around as a 5th DE and emergency NT. Even then, he still has to be activated on gameday in order for us to use him, and I really doubt the Chiefs are going to activate that much fat at the expense of speed and agility on special teams. That and Howard has to have developed the skills and ability to play the 5-technique. That remains to be seen. He either has it or he doesn't.

How they approached the draft reinforces this view to me, IMO.

Odds are both of them are JAGs... but AJ was a first rounder and Hemingway performed similarly to Dexter in the combine.

Hence why I think there's something that a lot of people don't consider when looking at the roster.. I think the FO and coaches see something in the two receivers that fans don't.

Whether that's going to work out or not is up for debate, however.
How am I being cryptic?

We here at CP are generally giving up on him too soon.

The 9ers gave up on him too soon.

Those are facts.
Nothing cryptic about them.

Eh, fine. I misinterpreted what you were saying then.

I'll hold to the fact that I think Reid/Dorsey saw something with the current receiving staff that allowed them not to upgrade at the position the way most posters here and pundits watching the NFL thought they would.

He will be our Harper/Kennison to Bowes Michael Irvin, bet me on it, call your bet... Reid isn't going to give up on him so fast, he's going to coach him up and max out that first round talent, bet me...
I'll give you that without shitting on it, only because AJ Jenkins has shown he can run around on an NFL field and occasionally play his position and catch a football when given an opportunity. Too bad you can't say the same about anyone after Derrick Johnson at ILB.

I think AJ is destined to play the slot. He was groomed to take over for McClusters production. There is 50 balls and about 500 yards up for grabs so someone has to take it.

Hmm.. AJ's faster, can jumper higher and is taller (clearly) than Dex. Meanwhile, Junior had the same broad jump distance as AJ and had one more rep on the bench than Dex did....

He was groomed to take over for Avery.. Jenkins pretty much never played slot last season. When he's on the field Bowe moves inside for the most part and when Avery went down last season with the shoulder it was Jenkins who lined up at X.

That's a misleading 6 weeks, though.

7 of the 28 against Denver came on a kickoff return and another 7 came after an INT and return set up the Chiefs at the Denver 22.

Then it was the Redskins (#30) on defense

Followed by the Raiders (#29) on defense

Then only 7 points against a top 10 (#9) Colts defense

Then only 24 points in an OT loss to the Chargers, with 7 of them coming of an INT that allowed a drive to start at the Chargers 23 yard line.

The first Chargers game was probably the team's offensive high point, scoring well against a #11 scoring defense. Outside of that, the offense lit up two terrible defenses and fared average to poor against the better defenses in that stretch.

Not terrible, certainly, but the offense wasn't exactly kicking ass and taking names.

I will admit that my enthusiasm is based on a very narrow bit of data, but the guy is just too young and has flashed too well here to throw away.

And of course I've said again and again and will stand by it, this guy not only looks like Kennison when he's running, but his arm movements and everything else about him looks like EK in the act of catching a pass... a crazy fast track guy learning to reach out for the ball.

I've belabored that comparison lately, but only because I see it for what it is. Not just using EK as a comparison because he's what I know best, but its just that this guy is JUST LIKE him... the gangly speedster who needed a team that WANTS him to get comfortable in the NFL, they're sooo similar its silly.
