We can't justify a position that we should have taken Geno at 1.1 with a Russell Wilson/Kurt Warner "you never know" argument. The Chiefs picked up the guy they, and by all accounts most others, thought was the best available QB with their 2nd rounder this year (and a pick TBD later).

i was talking to a buddy of mine last night who is a die hard chiefs fan, and he said that, not me, that alex smith was by far the best qb the chiefs could of gotten this offseason, and hes happy with it. And hes one of the more realistic fans out there. It was a no brainer. And has to say something. The chiefs could of had Kolb for Free, Flynn for cheaper, Carson Palmer for less than they gave up, matt hasselbeck for free, a lot of options that know the Andy Reid/ Mike holmgren systems, and they didnt. They over paid for alex smith. That should ring a bell with some angry fans that the NFL has some sort of respect for alex smith.

Yes. Initially, I was hopeful that the Chiefs would trade for Nick Foles because of what it would say about Reid's confidence in Foles. Of course, that would have looked even more like the Pioli/Cassel situation than this does so people would have had a cow over that too. The fact that Reid picked Alex Smith and that reports suggest that he's tried to trade for Smith before tell me that we should at least give the Reid/Smith combo a chance to see what they can do together.

I loved nick foles in college, and i loved when he got drafted. And I think Andy wanted him too, but the eagles are being bitches, and didnt want to trade him.

Alex Smith is tough, smart, efficient, and all class.

That earns respect.

I respect how he has handled himself each and every year, through all the adversity, the benchings, and the final benching last season while putting up highly efficient numbers.

But the bottom line is that he simply isn't a franchise QB capable of putting his team on his shoulders and carrying them to a championship.

As a fan that hasn't seen his team win a championship since '70, that just isn't acceptable.

I understand that. The goal shouldnt be just to get to 9-7. I know that Alex Smith isnt the long term solution at qb, no matter how many press conferences fat andy says that hes going to get alex smith into the hall of fame. I get that. My guess is, that you will draft your QBOTF next year.

who would you have preferred this offseason to Alex? Another year of Cassel? What franchise QB could we have landed?

At the end of the day, if we aren't going after a QB that has the potential to lead his team to a SB, not just ride his team's coat tails, but lead, then I don't give a rat's ass who the QB is.

I'd rather have any QB that doesn't cost premium picks for managing games.

I've seen this song and dance before.

Just don't think there is a guy that we could say fits that mold this offseason. And this draft was terrible in the QB department.

My point is, I am not spending premium picks for a guy that I believe firmly has about as much chance at leading a team the the SB as I do of winning the lotto.

I'd rather give up lower picks for a guy like Flynn, or sign a guy like Stanton in free agency than throw away two 2nds, potentially, or a 2nd and 3rd, for Alex Smith.

They are all just stop gaps who will take you nowhere.

Never said they should have. I don't have a problem with what they did, just pointing out to hootie that we can't declare these qbs one thing or another simple because they were passed on a round or two.

They haven't played a down yet.

Hootie didn't do that. What he declared was that they weren't good prospects not that they couldn't someday shock the world and become good QBs.

I can't speak for others, but the fear I have is that Alex will play OK but not great and earn what most Chief QB's get, more time than they deserve. I know that past regimes don't control the fate of this one, but my fear is there just the same. Alex not getting a new contract was a good start at least. I just want this organization to judge the QB with their eyes and not go OUT OF THEIR WAY to find a way to defend them.

A healthy amount of the fan base seems to only want a chance at a fun season with a risk-free QB, and until something different happens I am not going to be able to trust that the organization looks at the QB position differently. Just have to hope that it isn't the case, or that Alex actually is more than I think he is.

I think that's a fair fear. I also think that it's reasonable to believe that if Alex plays OK but not great this first year that he may well deserve more time if the coaches see progress. I think we should expect Alex Smith to be here for 3 years unless he really bombs in 2013. We should also expect the Chiefs to make some continual effort to find a QBoTF in the next couple of drafts, but I doubt that they'll be trading up in the first to snag a blue chip prospect in 2014.
