If the Chiefs go 8-8 or better 49ers get a 2nd round pick.

A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.

So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way.

Hey, you know what? When Alex cut his attempts from 30 to 20 a game his QB rating started going up and he quit throwing so many picks since he was only throwing 2/3 of the time.

But yes. You're right Alex is a guy that needs to have a dominate offensive line and denfense to be servicable at QB. I will give you that one.
Rich Gannon was a known commodity... until he wasn't.

FTR. I would have rather have taken a shot at a guy like that. A backup in the league that maybe didn't really get a chance to prove himself for as long as Alex did. A Rich Gannon, a Jake Delhomme, a Matt Schaub, a Brett Favre, a Trent Green type of guy.

Rich Gannon had 39 starts before coming to KC as a backup. But he had 58 starts before going to Oakland where he finally made his mark.

Given your argument, I assume you don't think we know who these guys are yet:

Ryan Leaf - 21 starts
JaMarcus Russell - 25 starts
Akili Smith - 17 starts

It would be interesting to see how that went by game. I would think one might be a little more conservative in a guys first few games in the league.

Yes, we really were. Strong D and STs... Harbaugh and Co. kept the offense simple while our offense was evolving (and was far more a work in progress than our D was). Our run game in short yardage situations was also really shaky.

Jim actually conformed a bit to the Mike Singletary approach of running a heavy-set formation to WILL our way on the ground to the first down. It failed a lot last season... failed a lot the last few seasons. All we managed to do was add those big bodies to clog up our own RBs.

On passing downs when we would get penalized and end up in 3rd and 20, we would send the TEs and WRs on clear-outs... throw to the RB over the middle... pick up 10-15 yards... and send in our stud punter to play the field position game. That's just how we rolled... because we figured Lee would boom the punt for great yardage and then our D would force them to punt it back.

My fault. He did have almost 1/2 the starts of Alex Smith. He was also played well for the Chiefs which is why Gruden picked him up. There was also a guy sacking groceries that will be going into the HOF, but I wouldn't sign every guy stocking grocieries to play QB. I'll live by the rule, and you can live by the exeption.

I'm not sure how you are forming that opinion. I think it does take some guys more starts to get it than others. For example Elway avgs a 67 QB rating his first 3 seasons.

Your forgetting the 36 starts Young had In the USFL. SO thats 55 games of the so called "Body of Work". All these guys had chances to prove themselves, they turned out to be late bloomers. Trent Green was around for 7 freaking seasons to prove himself until he got a shot with KC. Sometimes guys just get better and finally get in the right situation. I dont know how its gonna work out for SMith, my god KC was 2-14 last year. Would it have been better for SMith to sit for 2 seasons? Absolutely yes, he was not ready to play and SF threw him out there and everyone an their brother knew he was doomed to fail. It just doesnt always work that way when a franchise is struggling. They sent him out there hoping for the best knowing full well they were a terrible terrible franchise at the time.

Alex Smith is not good enough to take any team anywhere. He will never play in a Super Bowl.
Incorrect. When Kyle Williams, had the FIRST ball go off his knee, alex smith had just connected with Vernon Davis to put the 49ers ahead 14-10. If we dont turn the ball over, that game is over. The giants hadnt moved past mid field in the second half without the help of the 49ers turn overs. Those are just FACTS. And alex smith was benched for JIM HARBAUGHS GUY. His HAND PICKED QB. Alex was never the long term solution under jim harbaugh. FACT....

He did what he could considering they were double covering Vernon Davis, and Crabtree couldnt get off the line of scrimmage, because as Jerry Rice said after the game, "he looked fat to me". He also didnt turn the ball over in that muddy shitty sorry excuse for a field we had that day. That, while throwing the ball to brett swain, and vernon davis. he also executed when he had to, to put the 49ers in fg range just to get the game to over time. MORE FACTS

The migration happened, because all Alex Smith supporters, even when he was the starter, were run off because they liked Alex Smith, and took it as a reprieve to leave and go where Alex Smith was going because well, ill only speak for me and my 14 other mults apparently, that Alex Smith would be well received. At the very least, as an upgrade over recent qbing for the Chiefs. Granted, coming in the day the trade was rumored, was a bit idiotic on my part.

11 27.8 att/game 90.7 QB Rating
12 21.8 att/game 104.1 QB rating

The 2012 Eagles averaged 38.6 att/game.

So as you can see what the "QB Whisperer" Jim Harbaugh did took the ball out of Smith's hands more. Boom. All of a sudden he is "better".

Hopefully Reid adjust, but a lot of these guys get their system and phiolosphy and don't want to vary from it, or just resort back to it out of instinct. If Alex throws 38 times a game you are on pace to be looking at Matt Cassell/Mark Sanchez type results.
Harbaugh, didnt throw any more than usual with Colin, than he did with alex smith. They both finished with the same amount of throws. On the dot actually. The biggest difference is Kaeps ability to push the ball down the field, and his propensity to extend plays, which is honestly the biggest difference, and biggest flaw in alex smith. Its why he will never be elite. Hes programmed so that everything has to be scripted. The best thing about him, is like someone said, you wont ever have to worry about not being in games. He isnt going to turn the ball over, and he has zero ego when it comes to checking into a running play, if he knows he can exploit the defense.

Then again, I do not like the chances of Alex Smith, if andy reid doesnt adapt away from his im gonna throw it every chance i get style.

He has to utilize JC, and the run game to set up the pass, or you will be a 6-10 team.

If he was picked anywhere else he may very well be out of the league right now. That stats tell us what Alex is and that's a guy you want throwing the ball about 20-23 times a game. That's something a lot of guys can be successful doing and not someone you give up 2 2nd over. That's just ****ing stupid.

Thank you! Even the biggest Alice homer on the planet gets it. We traded a 1st for a guy that needs to be put in risk adverse situations to succeed. Anymore then 20-25 safe passes a game and it's going to get ugly.

I swear if I said the Earth was round, I'd get people to argue it was triangle.

This always makes me laugh. Like, REALLY laugh.

8 years. 8 years. 8 years.

When the best of the best, Drew Brees, and Aaron Rodgers, publicly state how they are surprised that Alex Smith was able to survive through all the bullshit he and the 49er players went through, before Jim Harbaugh, Jed York, and Trent Baalke took over, and to even become successful at ALL, and make it through, when players like David Carr, Jamarcus Russell, Tim Couch, Joey Harrington couldnt, and then myopic fans, now, understand this, i consider you to be one of the more intelligent fans here, but this view, is MYOPIC. Jim Harbaugh, in college, had the BEST QB IN THE COUNTRY, yet he still ran the ball, 58 percent of the time. Troy Aikman, a hall of fame qb, handed the ball off 55 percent of the time. Joe Flacco, only threw for 3800 yards last year. And won the super bowl. This style, of the running game, defense and passing game, has won the PAST TWO SUPER BOWLS. The two teams in the super bowl, ran the ball more than they threw it. Why people are so offended by this style, is beyond me. Its winning. And its going to keep winning. The most complete teams are winning, something the chiefs if people will stop focusing on the two picks that were given up, and just look at this chiefs team compared to last year, is a far more COMPLETE TEAM, and thats not even counting alex smith.

That is counting guys like Donnie Avery, Anthony Fasano, Travis Kelce, Retaining albert, resigning bowe, kniles davis (didnt understand the pick, but hes a talent) Sean Smith, Dunta Robinson, Mike DiVito, Niko Johnson, and the coaching staff. this is a complete football team and all of that, and i didnt even mention Schwartz, or the first overrall pick in the draft.

There is a lot to be happy about with this team.
