The only way you can convict him is to prove that he started the fight, and that was impossible to prove beyond a reasonable doubt. A lot of people are going on and on about "well he brought the gun into it" or "well he shouldn't have gotten out of his car", or "if Trayvon threw the first punch, it was only because he was scared of the guy following him", but none of those things matters.

If you cant prove that Zimmerman started the fight, then given that he was obviously getting his ass beat, he walks.

That's what is scary, I can follow you, hit you in the nose, start losing the fight, shoot you and get away with it by saying you started it.....My word against...........crickets......

This was not a stand your ground case. They decided to waive the stand your ground defense and went for pure old-fashioned, self defense.

Every state that allows for a concealed weapon permit, which is currently everywhere but Illinois and a few cities, also allows for a self defense argument.

You want the stand your ground law repealed because the media suckered you into their story? You probably never even knew the law existed until recently. You're letting a bad incident out weigh the good. If someone were to try to stab you out on the street and you shot them, you've just used the stand your ground law...instead of murder 2 since you didn't try to run.

Stand your ground and CCW have lowered violent crime over the last ten years. You seem like the one who wants to go back to the good old days and let the "militia" and gangs kick your ass while you're unable to protect yourself.

BTW...Stand Your Ground wasn't used as a defense in this case, IIRC??? I didn't see the whole trial so feel free to correct me.

Its not scary, because no one is going to plan on doing that. Only paranoid nuts think that.

Even if you are probably going to be technically found not guilty, you'll probably still have to go through a trial, have your name and face on the news, worry about vigilante justice, and have your life if not ruined, then severely impacted.

Last year a black man was found not guilty in Iowa after shooting a white guy who was attacking him. Most people believed that was the correct verdict, too.

I think this is an important point. Even though Zimmerman was found not guilty and therefore isn't going to jail, it's not like his life is back to normal. At a minimum, he's essentially going to either be under house arrest (of sorts) for years or risk nutjobs retaliating against him.

The lives of him and his family are going to be negatively impacted by this for a very long time, regardless of the verdict. You can bet your ass he wished he would've done something differently that night.
