What Is The First Thing(s) You Should Do When You Get a New Computer?

Bringing home a new laptop tonight. I read they don't come with restore discs anymore. Is this true? Is creating system restore disks the first thing I should do? What else do you do with a new computer to make sure things go right?

(Thank you in advance for your suggestions to fap, load porn, googel "aids tree", etc.)

Sure can -- the program works by doing a sweep on you system for trial software and other pre-bundled junk that usually come on new PCs. You'd then select the checkboxes next to each program/trial you want to remove and it removes them. Only thing about running it on a older PC is I don't know how much trial or crapware that you'd still have on it. No harm in letting it do a sweep though.

And don't listen to Setsuna -- the paid version of Malwarebytes would be a fantastic purchase. You can couple it with something light-weight like Panda Cloud AV (free) if you'd like to be extra safe. I actually run this combo and have for over a year.
I'd also do what Fish suggested and visit ninite.com on the new pc and go ahead and install what he listed -- makes it much easier than visiting each website independently.
You have all the info you need
Sweet, gonna' decrapify. Yeah, I'm taking Fish's advice on ninite.
Already bought the malawarebytes paid, used the coupon code for 20% off.
Thanks again.

I would caution against relying only on Malwarebytes though. I think there's need for a low footprint antivirus program too. There are some things that Malwarebytes just doesn't actively scan for. It wasn't designed to scan for. Things like realtime protection of key system files and folders. Root kit like activity. Virus scanners have system access and monitoring that Malwarebytes doesn't have. Malwarebytes wasn't meant to be a "Total System" protection model. It doesn't conflict with other virus scanners.

Face mentioned Win7 comes with the Defender AV package built in. Would you say that, coupled with malwarebytes, is sufficient?

Windows Defender does the same thing that Malwarebytes does. Catches malware, spyware, java attacks, and similar stuff. But it's not meant to be a virus scanner. For the same reasons as Malwarebytes. Windows will give you a security warning about no AV program even with Defender turned on.

And Defender isn't as good as Malwarebytes Pro. You could actually turn Defender off. But it doesn't really hurt to have both. That thing has plenty of RAM....

To clarify, Windows Defender is built-in and is a decent AntiSpyware program, but it's NOT an AntiVirus program. I'm talking about Microsoft Security Essentials, which is both. You have to download it manually.

How about Malaware?
This is a matter of opinion that can be debated until the sun comes up. My answer is 'no, Microsoft Security Essentials (integrated AV) is enough' but an extra layer of protection certainly won't hurt.

Really you don't need an anti-virus program or anything. I went without anything for a couple years, and I download crap left and right, and didn't ever get anything. I guess it's a "better safe than sorry" thing. Right now I have avast and it seems cool.

Yeah I read my response and didn't elaborate. Malwarebytes is not as effective as Avast. I praised Avast for stopping all threats at the point of attack and I've been on a lot of suspicious sites to prove it.

Thanks for clarifying. I installed Avast and Malwarebytes paid version. Did not install MS Essentials or Defender as I didn't want them all to conflict.
Hope this is enough.
