NFL considers dropping the Pro Bowl

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/goodell...6848--nfl.html

Quote:
NEW YORK (AP) -- The NFL will consider dropping the Pro Bowl if the level of play doesn't improve, Commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday night.

Appearing on SiriusXM NFL Radio's ''Town Hall,'' Goodell agreed with host Michael Strahan that last January's Pro Bowl ''was embarrassing.''

''If we cannot accomplish that kind of standard (of high play), I am inclined to not play it,'' Goodell said. ''It is really tough to force competition, and after a long season, to ask those guys to go out and play at the same level they played is really tough.''

The league still would select a Pro Bowl team through voting by players, coaches and fans, because it is an honor, but ''just not play the game,'' he said.

The Pro Bowl will take place in January, a week before the Super Bowl, after the players lobbied to keep it, promising to upgrade their performances. Goodell and others were disappointed in the quality of last year's Pro Bowl, won 59-41 by the AFC and missing any semblance of hard hitting.

You want hard hitting, but you make them play straight up with no blitz's and I think no stunts. If you make the rules completely on the side of the offense, then how does he expect it to be a good game?

The game has always lacked something, but at least they played harder in the past. I would think none of those guys want to embarrass themselves like they did last year.

I'd never actually seen footage of the Robert Edwards injury (Post 64). That's just about the most gruesome knee injury I've ever seen. If he was a horse they would've shot him on the spot. Such a shame.

Most of the time, your Super Bowl teams are going to have a good amount of players that should be playing in the pro bowl. Just put it back to AFTER the Super Bowl.
The Pro Bowl lost all validity when they allowed the fans to vote.

The only post-season honor that's worth a shit, IMO, is an All-Pro designation.

Again, agents would never go for it. Players could be injured and teams could use those results against players come contract negotiation time.

Isn't a 16 game season with a playoff and championship game enough competition?

Just give them the honors and that's it. There's no need for any of the other bullshit.

Although I think it'd be cool to still have the ProBowl "get together" where fans can come meet the players.

I figure this is your conjecture and not your actual opinion, but it's still a good opportunity for me to say, "Screw the agents. The agents can go to H-E-double-toothpicks".

I'd like to see this type of competition. I would think the odds of injury in these types of events would be very low. Edwards' injury was in a flag football game and was a huge fluke (or maybe not if the sand was an issue). I'd like to see stuff like who can do the most pushups or who can bench the most or who can run a mile the fastest or who can throw the most footballs through a tire. These are things that the players would be doing anyway as part of their training.

Actually, I am friends with a few agents (one could be considered a "Super Agent") and they've told me they'll never allow their clients to compete or participate in any type of non-paid, non-insured event for many reasons, not limited to contract negotiations/re-negotiations.

This is a contact sport that's different from baseball (Home Run Derby) or basketball (Slam Dunk competition). These guys are pushing their bodies to the break point every single day.

MOST aren't natural athletes and have to use supplements, eat 10,000 calories a day, etc. Guys try to make weight with Star Caps and diuretics. Many of these guys train year-round just to compete for a job.

There's no way that their agents, the guys that are supposed to have their backs, are going to allow them to participate in some half-assed, Made-For-TV extravaganza that pays them nothing while 2 million viewers the weekend after Easter Sunday tune in.

Bottom line: Simple economics.
