Alex 3:16

Alex Smith is 3-16 as a starter when asked to throw 35+ times. Andy Reid's Eagles threw the ball 35.7 times per game over the past 4 years.

Weakness

Production has never matched efficiency either in total yards or in total touchdowns.

His desire to be “perfect” and to be mistake free, leads to excess caution, resulting in missed passing opportunities and excessive sacks. He is so committed to ball security, he won't throw into traffic even when he could throw receivers open. This condition is magnified on 3rd and long. He is just dedicated to not throwing the interception on 3rd and long.

Conservative, cautious player bordering on paranoid to make mistakes, which limits his upside. No risk = no reward.

He lacks killer instinct. He doesn't display that ruthless drive to attack and destroy. He plays not to lose rather than playing to win.

He is not strong armed. I still think this goes back to his shoulder injury in 2007 when he missed about 2 years, not playing again until mid-season 2009.

Not good going through progressions. He tends to check down if his 1st read is not open.

Lacks field vision, often misses seeing the open receiver unless it is his 1st read. Still won’t throw it unless the receiver is open.

Can’t throw into a window. Worse still, he won’t throw into a window. Often, the mere close proximity of a DB on a WR causes Alex to throw to a closer target with more separation or to check down.

yea, hes better than Cassel in the sense that he has a high enough football IQ to know what he sucks at and is self aware of his physical limitations with his noodle arm, and thus refuses to try and make tight throws that separate the men from the boys at the position. he's gun shy from all his failures in the NFL

but that also enables him to be really good at being an efficient game manager and hes kind of accepted that role as the "best current game manager in the NFL" and we just have to hope we catch some "Trent Dilfer once in every 15-20 years lightning in a bottle crap QB to the Super Bowl with really really good positional play" type effect here

So at least he won't throw 4 picks and say he graded out perfectly, right?

Sweet....another QB who will make our o-line look way worse than it is because he'll repeatedly take sacks instead of getting rid of the ball.
