Movies

Yeah, so I saw a lot of movies this weekend.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age - Mediocre, at best. Slow and dragged on. Shorten it to 2 hours and it's golden. It's not, so it fails.

Michael Clayton - Amazing. Everything about it is awesome. However, it's VERY complex and mind bending. You have to think, so be prepared. I still feel like I'm missing key details of exactly what happened. Gotta see it again.

Across the Universe - Perfect is one word that comes to mind. It just works. And, contrary to many people I bet, the movie is best viewed sober. Trust me.

I haven't seen A Prophet yet but really need to.

I really liked The White Ribbon and it was IMO an equal to The Secret in Their Eyes but The Secret in Their Eyes is probably more compelling.

Yeah, I know a lot of people felt that way. It helped that I saw it after it was panned by most commentators so that helped set my expectations pretty low.

Just was a messy waste IMHO.
I liked Book of Eli better than Legion.

I don't understand why Broken Embraces wasn't nominated.

Just watched a decent little documentary titled Crips and Bloods: Made in America. Despite the title, the film is less a history of the Crips and Bloods and more of a succinct overview of the hows and whys of gang culture in the United States. Curiously, the filmmaker is skateboard legend Stacy Peralta.

I assume you've seen Dogtown & Z-Boys about the skateboard crew he grew up with? If not, it's really good. So is his follow up on surf culture called Riding Giants from what I hear but I haven't gotten around to watching it.

I've talked about this movie before, but I finally found it on DVD today. (Walmart - 9 bucks)

It's a real shame it never made it to theaters. It's a hell of a lot of fun. Check it out if you get a chance.

I haven't seen it and really know little about the other two that were nominated outside of three mentioned so I really don't have a take.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus - Hot chick, interesting story but boring delivery IMO.

World's Greatest Dad - A few funny parts but also pretty boring.

Re-watched Se7en yesterday as part of my IMDB top 50 revival. Great movie even with more than a couple of viewings over the years. Everybody does a great job, even Paltrow's fairly small bit seemed perfect. Silence of the Lambs has always been my gold standard for these kind of movies but upon review I've got to say Se7en's better. Although don't let Hanibal Lector hear that.

Just finished watching "What the #$*! Do We (K)now!?". It's part quantum physics documentary, part Alice in Wonderland, and part transcendental meditation style spiritual philosophy. It was really pretty interesting although I thought it took a strange turn from the first half (mostly about quantum physics ideas) to the second (mostly about the way the body experiences emotions and how the mind might be able to impact the course of our emotional life). It would probably be a bit off-putting for religious believers as it takes a pretty patronizing view toward religion. I think it would be right up irishjayhawk's alley though. I recommend it to anyone who thinks they can deal with the assertion that there isn't really such a thing as good and evil and that traditional religion is a form of intellectual slavery.

Only saw it once, and all I can remember is the word 'amatuerish'

Nothing was particularly probing or memorable, and the 'hard' science was fairly off-base on even rudimentary points.

Robin Hood - 6/10. Ridley Scott can make a cool looking movie. That much is always true. This looked great but the plot was a bit of a mess. I understand they were trying to do something different with the story, but it just ended up being a little stupid. The biggest redeeming quality of it is the look. It would be fantastic if this movie eventually lead to them producing something worthwhile, like another historical-fiction epic. Imagine what Ridley could do with something from the Hundred Years War and a hard R rating...
