Sandy Hook Demolition

So apparently the Sandy Hook task force recommended that they demolish the school and rebuild. I just don't see how that helps the kids involved and would be a huge waste of taxpayer money. What do you guys and gals think?

Poll forthcoming...

If the only motivation is because something bad happened there, then that's just stupid.

This is a good point.

There wouldn't need to be a dime of taxpayer money spent. It wouldn't take much organization at all for a fundraiser drive to go viral and yield millions in private donations.

And those could easily cover the costs of the new school.

I voted no and still don't support a taxpayer funded version. That said, it is an old school and there are creative solutions to having it funded that would yield a better educational environment for the students.

This isn't a "my God, what if a child finds a finger" type emotional response. From a purely logical perspective, the events at Sandy Hook would allow that community to essentially get a free brand new school to replace an aging relic. What's the downside here if it can be done through private donations?

why? If they vote on a bond to fund the new school, why shouldn't they do it? I can't imagine why it sould be any of your business what they decide to do.

we're probably in the minority. I'd be pissed at the waste of taxpayer dollars, but arguing against the demo is probably a losing battle because most people are superstitious and stupid about this sort of thing.

There's a reason why many areas require you to disclose if a house you are selling had a murder in it, and that lowers the price. (why, you think the place is friggen' haunted?)

maybe not on an internet poll, but I'm pretty sure demo would win big on a ballot.

Yeah. Not trying to be insensitive.. but at some point you have to accept that bad stuff happens everywhere, and we can't just erase it and start over in every scenario. There seems to be a "Throw away" mentality these days. Where everything is treated as disposable. But that's illogical and unsustainable. Many states are completely racked with debt in the millions right now. Spending millions more of tax payer money, just to assuage the emotions of some people is a pretty poor precedent.

As has been said, if they can replace the school with donated funding from those who care, more power to them. But this isn't the smart way to spend tax dollars.

Well maybe they should all be home schooled. I would think just the fact of being at school would be just as tramatic.

They'll probably guilt trip Congress to making it a Federal project. And the GOP will be too scared to upset soccer moms by voting against it. If they didn't go along, it'd be just another shot fired in their "War against women"

As a union carpenter I say yeah, knock em down, even the buildings close to the tragedy... We can build some nice new ones for em.

Agreed. I'm talking about Federal dollars. Not a dollar of my tax money should go to that, but yes absolutely: if they want to tax themselves (which was my point), go for it!

There were people calling to demolish the Aurora theater too, and they acted insulted that the company planned to open the theater back up after the tragedy. I just don't get it....

and it's painfully obvious that you have your mind made up and with every answer you will give an over the top example. I'm sure there will be trauma associated with any school by virtually every student there and I agree that at some point there has to be some movement forward. However, making a child sit in a building 40 hours a week to remind them of their pain is not how to do that. That's the old slap some dirt on it boy mentality and that isn't going to work. Regardless, my opinion on the mental health of the students the real question should always be:

Is being in that building conducive to learning?

That answer is no.
No.

Seriously. I hope none of these people ever go to Europe - good luck finding a spot in city where a bunch of people didn't die.
