Teicher: Chiefs prepare to play without Sims or Roaf

http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansas...s/12629433.htm

Sims, Roaf out of action
Chiefs are preparing for Raiders without either injured starter

By ADAM TEICHER
The Kansas City Star

The Chiefs are preparing to play Sunday night’s game at Oakland without left offensive tackle Willie Roaf and defensive tackle Ryan Sims.

Both players left early in Sunday’s season-opening 27-7 win over the Jets with injuries, Roaf with what the Chiefs called a strained hamstring and Sims with a sprained foot.

The Chiefs may also be missing cornerback Patrick Surtain and fullback Tony Richardson. Surtain received a concussion against the Jets while Richardson injured his knee and ankle.

Coach Dick Vermeil suggested both players would be listed as questionable when the Chiefs issue their league-mandated injury report on Wednesday.

The Chiefs replaced Roaf with right tackle Jordan Black. Chris Bober came off the bench to play right tackle.

Kevin Sampson began the preseason as the right tackle but lost the job to Black when he injured a toe. Sampson could be ready to play against the Raiders, but Vermeil wouldn’t say whether he would start if he’s healthy.

If neither Sampson nor Roaf plays Sunday, the Chiefs would have three reserve offensive linemen: rookie tackles Will Svitek and Jeremy Parquet, and center Johnathan Ingram. None has played in a regular-season NFL game.

“Hopefully, they won’t become veterans any time soon,” Vermeil said.

Sims could be out for several weeks. The Chiefs dispersed his snaps to John Browning and Jimmy Wilkerson.

It's a good thing the Raiders don't have any good pass rushing ends. We can get by this game without Roaf, after that we need him back quickly.

Well, the Raiders defense was horrendous against the Patriots. Holmes and Johnson should have some serious fun sunday night, especially with no Willie Roaf protecting Green's blind side.

I think the Chiefs can run the ball all over the Raiders and keep Moss and the Raiders offense on the sidelines. This will be especially important if Surtain isnt able to play in the game. The thought of Mcleon or Washington on Randy Moss sends chills down my spine.

I know Saunders loves the passing attack, but when you have Roaf out, and Holmes and Johnson in the backfield, you have to play to your strengths.

The defense is gonna get Collins. Theres just no way the O-line of the Raiders can stop the blitzing of Cunningham all day long. The defense will get some big stops for us, and then its up to the offense to cram the ball down the throats of the Raiders with Holmes and Johnson.

yup, I think it's huge if we don't have Surtain against the Raiders.

I'd be shocked if Surtain doesn't play, it is being described as a "mild concussion". As of now, I think he's likely to play.

You never know with that kind of stuff though. Head trauma is one of those really touchy type of injuries that you dont want to mess with.

Surtain is a physical corner. He'll come up and hit in the running game. If he is having any lingering effects from that hit, it is best that he just sit this one out and get fully recovered, rather than risk being injured more seriously and missing a great deal of games.

We are going to need this guy for the whole season, and risking it for just one game is not a good idea.

Id love to see him play, but only if he is not at risk for further injury that stems from the hit he took in the opener.

The Chiefs have some great doctors, and you know the coaches know how important he is to the team, so they will be careful with him. If they say he is good to go, I wont be worried that they are risking him just for one game.

Oakland actually defended the run very, very well in that Patriots game. Having Ted Washington plant his behind in the middle has a lot to do with that though. Their secondary was atrocious. It was behind atrocious. I'm the first person to want to go Martyball on people, but if we don't take advantage of that secondary we're making a mistake. It wasn't just some bad secondary play, Pats recievers were getting ridiculously wide open every single play.

Well, DV did say that Surtain "would play" on his radio show. I'm sure that could change, I'm just saying as of right now, I think he's going to play.

Dude was out cold for like 3 minutes, I doubt it's very mild... We see players with mild concussions get right back up in the NFL and even with those there are cases when they miss games. I'd rather let Surtain fully recover, even if that means risking a loss to the Raiders. Surtain is awesome, we can't afford to lose him for a long time just because we wanted to win in week 2.

Also, I imagine it's pretty hard playing with a concussion especially at such a skill position as CB.

DV said on his show that after Surtain got inside he was moving around and acting fine. They considered sending him back in, but didn't because you just don't **** around with concussions. They wanted to observe him more for lingering effects. Which is what they will be doing this week.

I'm sure he COULD have played, but it probably was the best idea to keep him out, especially when the Jets were getting Whooped.

I'm sure he could have played and functioned.

When I was a Sr in HS, I got knocked out by a really good stand up switch in a wrestling tourn....Some smelling salts and a couple of minutes and I finished the day with a 3rd medal.....but didn't remember any of it.

Every situation is different, but I'll wager that Surtain plays and is fine.
