Great Movies That You've Never Heard Of
The Batman thread got me thinking about this. When I was in Missouri last weekend, I saw a movie called Equilibrium on DVD at a friend's house. Never heard of it, right? Neither had I. Well, this movie, which was released in 2002, stars Christian Bale (Batman), Sean Bean (LOTR) and Angus McFayden (Robert the Bruce from Braveheart), and is one of the better movies I've ever seen. Part Matrix, part Logan's Run, with a little Blade Runner and a dash of Fahrenheit 451 (and even a little Kill Bill swordplay at the end), this movie may not be terrribly original, but it ROCKS, with dazzling action sequences and great dramatic performances. I really don't want to give anything away, but suffice to say if you haven't seen it, you should. Blockbuster has it, you can buy at on Amazon, and if you get really lucky you might be able to find it at Best Buy. I instantly bought it when I found it. IMO, it's BETTER than Batman Begins.
This movie got two thumbs up from Ebert and Roeper, and I'm assuming it got good reviews from other critics as well. How this wasn't a multi-million dollar summer blockbuster I can't imagine. I also can't imagine how the motion picture industry will activly pimp crap like Bewitched and then sweep great movies like this under the rug (and then bitch about not making enough money). Anyway, I thought perhaps some of you might know of some other unknown, unseen diamonds in the rough out there that never got the marketing they deserved. Any contributions/recommendations (other than DONNIE fuckING DARKO ) will be appreciated. |

Liquid Sky - A drama tributed to the punk era. One of the lead roles played both male and female. Aliens feed of the high of heroin addicts and the orgasms of the lead character. It sounds odd and creepy, and it is. Strangest film that I ever enjoyed watching.
Emperor of the North - Borgnine and Marvin both at their best. Marvin is a #1 during the Depression, someone who is in charge of removing hobos from trains. He takes great pleasure in hurting the hobos as much as possible before usually killing them. One of the best fight scenes I have ever seen in a movie. Devils at the Doorstep - This one amazes me how little it has been seen. It was second place at Cannes and the Chinese government has actually banned the director for making films since the release of this one in 2000. In 1944 a Japanese captured village in China hides a Chinese war veteran and his Japanese prisoner against their will. It is gritty and the ending is one of the most climatic I have ever seen in a film.
