If the Chiefs go 8-8 or better 49ers get a 2nd round pick.

A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.

So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way.

I really liked the Chiefs with Marty Schottenheimer, Derrick Thomas, Neil Smith, Christian Okoye, Albert Lewis, Deron Cherry.

I stopped following the Chiefs when they got Montana, but I still liked them because of Marty. I was spending all my time defending the Montana trade and Steve Young to friends and co-workers and it just soured me on the Chiefs, through no fault of their own. That didn't stop me from liking Priest Holmes.

Enough about me.

I read you loud and clear that Alex is the intended Chiefs QotF. I'm just on record predicting that won't happen. I may well be wrong? Let me check my crystal ball...

Nope, not wrong.

Who knows? But yes I agree that they hope for Alex to be their long-term answer. Giving up 2 high picks for him says that. Not signing him to an immediate contract extension says different. Grandpappy Manning got a 5 years contract from Elway. Alex's 2 years leftover contract speaks volumes about the doubt Dorsey has. It is very much "wait and see" right now.

Alex is supposed to be the long term QB, but I don't think he makes it. I think Fat Andy finds a better QB in the interim and uses Alex to mentor him, just like with Kaepernick.

I'm sure you hope I am right.
Either result is fine with me. I'm good if AS pans out and I'm equally good if Andy Reid finds someone better. There's nothing to sweat over when it comes to those two options.

If Reids history is any indication of the future, he's going to throw it about 35 times per game.

It's on Smith at this point. He's going to have to shoulder the load.
I agree. I tried to remember but back when they were first coming up when reid had Duce staley, i swear they ran the ball more. I have no faith in alex smith being able to be mike vick, well, actually, i can see him being EXACTLY LIKE THAT. turnovers, and injuries. hes just not comfortable being the man. he wants to be a part of the solution, but not the SOLUTION...

I guess somewhere someone read that I said he was coming here to be the next coming of football jesus.

Hes coming here to be average alex.

you missed all that huh?
Oh, Amy...

I understand what point you're making. ALex is a great guy! His teammates love him! He's smart and runs the offense really efficiently, avoiding mistakes and getting out of the way of the running game and defense.

It's just that I've seen that formula before. Multiple times. In KC. And it was even less successful here than it was for Alex Smith in San Francisco.

Problem 1 is that formula is not a recipe for significant success in the NFL, not anymore.

Problem 2 is that KC's head coach has a strong history of doing the OPPOSITE of that formula.

Question for you: Does Alex manicure as well... you know where... as he does his eyebrows?

IMO, thats why some here are upset about Smith. He was/is at his best the last 2 years when that has been the gameplan (Martyball, power game, whatever you want to call it).

We don't know what he will be in a pass first aerial offense like Reid will run. He seems to have the accuracy and decision making skillsets, but thats basically all we have to go on at this point.
Really? With our draft-(all power blockers) A beefed up line- bringing in Fullbacks every other day and drafting a stud Blocking FB. Is there Any indication at all to the contrary besides the offenses in the past- that this is not what the chiefs are going to do. And why not control the clock, keep your d fresh, limit the Offensive turnovers, keep the other teams high powered QB's off the field. It is a great Old school stategy that has won many super bowls. It defintly plays well for Arrowhead.

Pretty much this.

If Smith isn't the guy, fine. It sucks what we gave up, but move one.

However, my fear of the situation is that because of what we gave up, they'll be more inclined to give him more chances than he deserves.

I think that Alex Smith is going to continue to be alex smith. hes going to make the safe play, hand the ball off, and keep the chiefs in games. Nothing wrong with that as long as the chiefs are winning.

While I do think going big when other teams bring in smaller guys to cover the pass is soemthing to think about, your posts isn't really the reality of whats going to happen.

Reid has never ran that type of offense. He brought in a more athletic bigger offensive lineman.

Maybe he changes his ways. I don't see it happening as coaches don't change that often or that dramatic.

You just don't know that. Reid would be silly to ask Alex to throw 30+ times a game. Not because Alex can't, but because it wouldn't be in the best interest of the Chiefs. The Chiefs have Jamaal Charles, for one thing. They went out and got a pounder in Sherman. They will take some shots, but otherwise, it would be foolish not to play ball control, high % offense with lots of runs and short passes to set up favorable down and distances. This obviously helps run clock and keep the KC defense fresh.

If there is substantial evidence that Reid is gonna do his own thing and demand 35+ passes per game, it would be nice to see the links.

... and let's say the DO pass 35+ times... most would say that Alex has been very effective in the short pass game... and that is despite facing defenses that load up the box to keep a close eye on Gore and the run game. So even if Alex has to throw 35 per... as long as the Chiefs are not terrible on defense? (meaning, that KC has to play 14+ point catchup).. then Alex will be fine with that.. as he won't feel pressured to force high risk (well covered) passes.

And thats fine, but like I've said here, Reids history shows that he's going to have to do more than hand it off and play it safe.

He's going to be asked to throw it around the yard.

And unless your O is powered by a QB who CAN make the big-time plays when it matters, it's an old-school strategy that doesn't produce playoff wins.

2 of the past 20 Super Bowl winners fit your formula. Odds are not good that type of plan works out long-term unless paired with a top 10 QB.

Yeah I don't know that. Nothing in Andy Reid's history as a HC says otherwise at all.

Whats more substantial evidence than....well his entire coaching career? He's never been a ball control, defensive HC.

He's an offensive QB centered HC that likes to throw the ball. Alot. They're gonna throw it when they're ahead/behind/even etc and try and score points.

I tend to think Smith has the ability to do that, but I also understand that if you look at his history when asked to do that, it might show the opposite.
