Misc Research Speech

I have to give a research speech for one of my classes and I was wondering if any of you had any good suggestions for a topic. I was thinking about doing something like the battle of the bulge but then I decided everyone has probably heard that story a million times. I am looking for some historical topic. I was considering operation Barbosa since most Americans aren't as familiar with it. Does any one have any suggestions for any obscure historical events I might research? Target audience will be college kids.

In junior high I gave a speech on booby traps used by the Vietnamese. It was a pretty interesting topic. Once you have your visual aids showing how the traps work, the speech writes itself. Not sure if it will impress your prof from the research side, but it is a slam dunk from the interest POV.

Well it's actually a public speaking class so the delivery of the speech is most important. That's a pretty cool topic though.

As an adult male with the benefit of 25 years of hindsight, let me say this.

Are there chicks in the class? Are there any chicks you want to impress?

We know that WWII is great. It really is. It's a story that practically writes itself. Villains, heroes, heavy machinery, flame throwers. No man can resist WWII. But chicks don't dig WWII. If you do a WWII speech, chicks will think you're into wargames and dungeons and dragons and stuff, and let me tell you from experience that it won't score you any points.

So if the class is all guys, or all guys and chicks that you don't dig who aren't roommates or friends with chicks that you do dig, then go with WWII. It's a winner, and you should do it on an interesting but esoteric topic like psychological warfare against the Japanese or the process people went through to go from being drafted to being assigned to a unit.

If there are chicks you dig, or there are chicks who know chicks you dig, let's think about something that will accomplish all three main goals (plus a fourth that's an important sub-element), which are:

1. Get a good grade.
2. Be an interesting talk.
3. Be intriguing to chicks and make them want to talk to you to learn more.
4. Not be so intriguing to chicks that they'll think you're gay and like you as a friend.

So what's a good topic for that? What are women interested in, but that isn't a pure chick topic?

It can't be about WWII on one end, and it can't be about fashion on the other end. For the most part, it can't be about history because all of the interesting history is about men. And it needs to be something that interests chicks, which means that it's about them and that it comforts their insecurities. So how about....

...scientific research on what makes people find other people attractive. (Slightly risky, but of fascinating interest since it's directly relevant to them.)
...the differences between types of royalty like dukes, earls, counts, and marquises. (Exception to the history rule is if it involves royalty and princesses.)
...a history of tourism and leisure travel (associates you with fun and pleasure, and gives a hint that you could be rich.)

OR! Why men are shitty and don't pay enough attention to them or their needs. Make it funny in a self-deprecating way and get laid that night.

How about a speech/research on one of the events dealing with Native Americans from their point of view/historical record. Almost every event between them and the White Man has been told from only one side. And when the side of the Native Americans is heard, it usually is completly different

How about Hitlers decision to encircle and reduce the Minsk pocket instead of advancing on Moscow? I've always figured without his decision to do so, Russia probably falls, and then it would be very interesting speculation on how the US and Britain would manage to fight Germany by themselves.
