If the Chiefs go 8-8 or better 49ers get a 2nd round pick.

A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.

So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way.

I tend to think Smith has the ability to do that, but I also understand that if you look at his history when asked to do that, it might show the opposite.
Fair enough. I can understand the conclusion you draw from Reid's history. I just think we may be surprised with a more balanced attack. Guess we'll see...

... and let's say the DO pass 35+ times... most would say that Alex has been very effective in the short pass game... and that is despite facing defenses that load up the box to keep a close eye on Gore and the run game. So even if Alex has to throw 35 per... as long as the Chiefs are not terrible on defense? (meaning, that KC has to play 14+ point catchup).. then Alex will be fine with that.. as he won't feel pressured to force high risk (well covered) passes.

Reid has never ran that type of offense. He brought in a more athletic bigger offensive lineman.

Maybe he changes his ways. I don't see it happening as coaches don't change that often or that dramatic.
We have been a great running team going clear back to PH. We dominated on the ground last year even though teams knew we were running it every play. I just can't see Reid trying to make this team the greatest show on turf-lol If anything the moves are to make us an even stronger runningteam.

There is nothing wrong with a running team at all- if that is what we are I am good with it. Sucks to sit there and watch your team unable to stop the run. With a few exceptions- most Champion teams can Run the ball and stop the run. Steelers have followed that blue print for years.

Except that small fact that says the more Alex is asked to throw the shittier he is historically.

The Steelers run the ball? Really? Do you watch much football other than the Chiefs?

We aren't going to be a running team anymore. We will run it, but the focus will be aerial.

Your owner told his GM to win now. Even if that is just a 3 year speed bump of mediocrity as a bridge to bigger things, it is just a 3 year delay in bigger things.

If you think your team is on the verge of winning big, and that the #34 pick this year wasn't useful and the #50 pick next year isn't useful, then I stand corrected.

I am fully ignorant how good your team is beyond your Pro Bowlers and your 7-9 record 2 years ago, which seems to be a better measure of your team than last year's fluke.

The Seattle Seahawks went to the playoffs at 7-9 just 2 years ago, and were on the doorstep of the super bowl just last year with their new Franchise Quarterback, Russell Wilson.

I'm not condemning your team to years of failure just because you wasted 2- 2nd round picks to win now instead of win big. I'm just saying that your owner compromised your progress toward winning big by demanding to win now.

That is a bad philosophy bay a bad owner to not just pick a good GM and tell him "Just win baby, I don't care how soon." (Al Davis pun intended for shock affect. Yes, it was a LOW BLOW.)

If it was the GM's philosophy rather than the owner, then you have a crappy GM.

If Alex Smith leads you to a 2016 super bowl win, then I will happily eat crow with humble pie for dessert.

I guess we'll see.

I'm glad my GM didn't have to rebuild from scratch because his former counterparts stockpiled high draft picks and didn't waste them stupidly during 10 years of moribund hell.
You can't win big without eventually winning now. Your premise is fubar.

Reid was the best option for us and our roster that's aging. We need a good veteran coach. His last years were concerning but their QB situation wasn't good. We have to get good QB production and we will be ok. I like that Reid is hiring a lot of coaches and situation coaches. I'm excited but not unrealistic. Alex is a question make no doubt but it'll be nice to actually be in games **** it.

You will have to ask Jim Harbaugh and his OC, Greg Roman.

I used the term "cover 0" because that was Kaepernick's own words. Yes, just stacked the line to blitz. The Ravens probably expected a run, and Kaepernick audibled into a fade pass.

We didn’t have a play for that so I audibled to a fade to Crab,” Kaepernick said of his fourth-down decision.

Looking back, Kaepernick said he’d attack that same matchup.

“I’ll take Crab one-on-one with anybody,” the 49ers quarterback said.

It's rather comical that people want to ignore 20 total years of history that tells us who/what Reid and Alice are. Some magic fairy dust isn't sprinkled on you once you become a Chief that turns you into someone else.

Cover 0 means no safety help, usually teams run it to force said QB to make a quick decision as they bring more guys than the offense has blockers.

They were second rounders, which, if Alex Smith can come in and provide six years of the same level of performance that he was providing in 2011 and 2012, were picks well spent.

A known commodity is much better than an unknown, and any draft pick, especially one past the first round, is most assuredly an unknown commodity.

The Chiefs will draft a QBOTF in approximately 3-4 years provided Smith is capable of directing Reid's offense in a competent manner. And I have absolutely no reason to think that he won't.

They have put together a coaching staff and player roster that is built to be competitive right now. Alex Smith was the most important addition to that reconstruction of the team other than Dorsey and Reid.

It's not like losing two second rounders are going to have the same impact as gaining a potential franchise QB, which Reid obviously feels he has in Alex Smith. We shall see, but if Reid is correct, then it was a viable trade.
