Ben Affleck is the new Batman

He'll replace Christian Bale in the Batman-Superman movie planned for 2015.

Ben Affleck will replace Christian Bale in the Zack Snyder-directed Batman-Superman movie that's scheduled to be released in July 2015.

Warner Bros. made the announcement on Thursday.

From the press release announcing the casting:

"Ending weeks of speculation, Ben Affleck has been set to star as Batman, a.k.a. Bruce Wayne. Affleck and filmmaker Zack Snyder will create an entirely new incarnation of the character in Snyder's as-yet-untitled project—bringing Batman and Superman together for the first time on the big screen and continuing the director's vision of their universe, which he established in Man of Steel. The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

"Affleck will star opposite Henry Cavill, who will reprise the role of Superman/Clark Kent. The film will also reunite "Man of Steel" stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.

"In the announcement, Silverman stated, 'We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics' most enduringly popular Super Heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some. His outstanding career is a testament to his talent and we know he and Zack will bring new dimension to the duality of this character.'

"Snyder also expressed his excitement about the casting of Affleck, noting, 'Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry's Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can't wait to work with him.'

"Kroll added, 'We are so thrilled that Ben is continuing Warner Bros.' remarkable legacy with the character of Batman. He is a tremendously gifted actor who will make this role his own in this already much-anticipated pairing of these two beloved heroes.'

Affleck has previous experience as a superhero -- he played Daredevil in the 2003 film of the same name.

A superhero has to look capable of super heroics.

I was just a kid so I loved it. I still have a soft spot for the first one and Keaton is good, if miscast.

The more I think about it, I think this role could be the one to really turn people around on Affleck as an actor. Of course, the screenplay will have to be worth a shit.

I just REALLY hope if it's Cranston, he isn't wasted. What a cool pick to play Lex.

I too think Affleck has the chops to make a good hero, he isn't the same guy from Armageddon at this point, dude has definitely grown at his craft.

People are just having a hard time getting past the fact that they think they know him well, i've come to the conclusion that he reeeally surprises in the same way Cruise did as Lestat, where even the author of those books who HATED the choice ended up saying "uh yeah, he actually did a great job".

And yes, Cranston is remarkable, a great choice, plenty of gravitas.

It's just too soon to cast anyone as Wayne so soon after Bale... If he wouldn't do it one more time then that might be a sign it's not a good idea.

I think everyone should give it a chance...if this is an older version of Batman Affleck may pull it off. I assume Bale was just done anyway...i mean he rode off in the sunset in rise

Cranston as Luthor is pretty sweet and Affleck has made some good stuff recently

I'm not happy about Affleck, but I'm glad it isn't Bale or JGL. Nolan's Batman doesn't belong in the MoS world.

I agree that it doesn't belong as well.

What would've your choice been? I liked when Bale was cast cause he was kind've an up and comer at that time and no well known like Affleck.

Of course Snyder could've just made a simple sequel to MOS but didnt

I don't know... I've heard Josh Brolin tossed around. I love Brolin as an actor, but I'm not sure I would buy him as Bruce Wayne unless Gotham had a vast oil reserve.

Some others I've seen that would be intriguing at least: Richard Armitage, Eric Bana, Michael C. Hall. If they want older, Ed Harris, Kurt Russell.

I don't understand Bale's appeal. He was great in The Mechanic and Rescue Dawn and everything else is just "okay".

I think JGL was far more mesmerizing and interesting in TDKR.
