Something that your attic fan has in common with Redrum's mother then. Of course, she sucks in an entirely different type of pollen than what you're talking about.

An "Attic Fan" is ran through a attic that is sealed off from the main part of the house.
A properly vented attic + attic fan = a big drop in attic temp which results in taking a load off of the A/C. You are basically pulling 95-100 degree air into an attic that is 25-30 degrees hotter. Even with insulation it makes a huge difference. How does dust get into the house when there is no air flowing through the living area of the house? Unless the house is leaking a ton of air there should be no air movement in the living area of the house. A whole house fan is completely different. It vents air through the house upwards through the ceiling into the attic just as previously stated. |

Swamp cooler ftw. We can't have attic fans here in PHX.

The belt drive on my attic fan was original from 1976 and badly cracked when we bought the house. It came up in the mechanical inspection. I bought a new belt in 2005 and waited for the old one to break, then replaced it this year even though the old belt was still working just to clear something off the todo list. So I don't know where they get this 'maintenance' thing that comes up. To be fair, the probably stopped making belts with the trans saturated fat/asbestos that they used to use in twinkies so this new belt might only last 20 years.
