What has Carl Peterson done to warrant a five year extension?? No playoffs in three years, no playoff wins in seven years, and a legacy of horrendous drafts and cap management.

This extension only strengthens my argument that the bottom line in KC is profitability, filling the seats and keeping fans interested. Any other General Manager with Carl's record would be long gone by now. 12 years is more than enough time to get it done. Peterson hasnt and is rewarded with a five year extension.

17 years. What a freakin joke. In 12 years, Peterson's teams have gotten three playoff wins. I wonder how many he will have after 17 years. My guess is three.

I am somewhat ambivalent on the subject of Carl.

On the one hand, he kept us competitive throughout the 90s. A noteworthy accomplishment in the salary-cap hobbled NFL. He brought exactly the right coach to KC when he hired Schottenheimer. He obtained players that suited Marty’s conservative, Defense-first scheme. When the fans grew tired of competitive and wanted champion, he took on some players of questionable character and the team collapsed when Marty lost control.

On the other hand, his drafts were far too conservative for my taste and he had no ability to judge Offensive talent. His draft picks have improved considerably over the last few years. He hired the wrong coach in Gunther when Art Shell was available. I do not fault him for the decision, but it will judge him on whether or not Gunther is retained as HC after this season.

On balance, Carl has been an asset to the team. Perhaps he has run out of steam. We will find out soon enough if Carl has the juice to make this team competitive again. An every-down HB and a new coaching staff will be the yardstick by which I will measure Carl.

would have preferred a two or three year contract with performance incentives.
While it was my preference to see a change, I am not as distraught at Carl staying as I am at the thought of Gunther & The stooges being retained.

At the VERY, AND I DO MEAN VERY least Stock and Kurt must go. If they give Elvis & JR a decent RB and they still fail then we know beyond a shadow of a doubt that JR & Gun must go.(Although I still believe that a staff housecleaning is in order now).

On a different note Packfan, I saw the article on the negotiations between the Packers & Favre on a "lifetime" contract. He is asking a bonus in the amount of $20 million dollars as part of his new contract.
For a guy whose skills have diminished as much as Favre's have, do you think this would be a wise investment on their part? never mind what he has done in the past, let's grade him on what he is worth now...

Mark,

According to Favre in a televised interview, he and the Packers are not close to a new deal. Favre is not the one who wants to renegotiate, the team does. So I doubt that Favre has demanded 20 million up front. He is still under contract for a few more years.

As far as diminished skills, I beg to differ. I have seen every Packer game this year and his skills have not diminished. In some regards, I think this is one of his better years. His receivers are dropping balls left and right. His rookie tightend is lost out there. He is playing with two rookie tackles, his third coach in three years, and without Dorsey Levens who did all the little things right i.e. pick up the blitz, know where to be for the dump off. He has slowed down in terms of being able to avoid the rush. But make no mistake about it, without Brett Favre, this team wins three games at the most. IMO, he is still the best QB, and most reliable, in the NFL.

Well, this is a post we all knew was forthcoming. So, almighty Packfan please grace us with your wisdom and tell us what can be done about it now. You are obviously the smartest, most wise fan in the NFL and I would like to apologise for Lamar Hunt for not hiring you to replace King Carl. Now, it appears this deal is done and there is nothing your continuous banter will do about that. Drop it and let's move on.
