Running to a Standstill

Running to a standstill
Chargers' Tomlinson had unprecedented poor game

Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson has spent most of his NFL career doing things nobody has done before.

He did it again last Sunday.

Tomlinson carried the ball 17 times against the Eagles and averaged 14.8 inches per carry. That made him the first player in the Super Bowl Era (since 1970) to rush for fewer than 10 yards on 17 or more carries.

The previous record was 11 yards, set on Oct. 19, 1975, by Redskins RB Mike Thomas against the Oilers, and matched by Jets RB Curtis Martin in 2000 against the Raiders.

Tomlinson, who was averaging 109 rushing yards this season and 95 per game over his five-year career, gained minus-3, minus-6, minus-2 and minus-2 on his first four carries against the Eagles, an average of minus-3.3. All told, Tomlinson gained one or fewer yards on 12 of his 17 carries against the NFL's 23rd-ranked rush defense.

The previous low rushing total by a Charger on 17 or more carries was 21 by Mike Garrett against the Chiefs on Nov. 19, 1972. The previous low rushing total against the Eagles on 17 or more carries was 21 by Garrison Hearst on Sept. 10, 1995.

Oddly, the NFL record for fewest rushing yards on exactly 19 carries was set last year by Dolphins RB Lamar Gordon (19-for-22 against the Bengals). Now with the Eagles, Gordon was on the field Sunday.

The lowest rushing total Tomlinson had on 17 or more carries before Sunday was 36 yards against the Saints on Nov. 7, 2004.

Tomlinson also has the most yards in the modern era on 31 carries -- 243 against the Raiders on Dec. 28, 2003. To surpass that last Sunday, he would have had to have gained 237 yards on his last 15 carries.

The only player in NFL history with two career games of 17 or more carries for under 20 yards is Emmitt Smith, who was 18-for-13 against the Redskins in 2002 and 17-for-16 against the Bengals in 2000.

More of the ridiculous, absurd and preposterous from the NFL's Week 7

Dolphins QB Sage Rosenfels entered last Friday night's game against the Chiefs with 2:47 to go in the fourth quarter and left with 2:35 remainnig. Those were the only 12 seconds he had played through seven weeks, and he made the most of them.

With his only pass of the season, Rosenfels completed a 77-yarder to Chris Chambers, the second-longest pass in NFL history by somebody who threw just one pass in a game. Steelers punter Josh Miller had an 81-yarder to Chris Hope against the Ravens on Dec. 28, 2003.

The last time Rosenfels played was Jan. 2 against the Ravens. He threw a 76-yarder to Chambers on his first pass of the game, so he's now thrown a TD pass of 76 or more yards on his first pass attempts of two consecutive games.

The last QB to do that was Dallas's Quincy Carter in 2002, with an 80-yarder to Joey Galloway on Oct. 13 against the Panthers and a 78-yarder to Antonio Bryant on Oct. 20 against the Cards.

Rosenfels has more TD passes of 76 or more yards in two games since the last day of last season than Brett Favre has in his last 50 games. And despite throwing just 39 passes since the last day of last season, he's the only NFL quarterback with two TD passes of at least 76 yards during that span.

Rosenfels has more TD passes of 76 yards or more in his last two games than Dolphins starter Gus Frerotte has in 117 career games (one).

Despite being on the field for just 12 seconds, Rosenfels finished the weekend with more passing yards than Texans QB David Carr, who amassed only 48 while played the entire game against the Colts.

• The Eagles (24 rushing yards) and Chargers (21 yards) combined for just 45 rushing yards, the lowest rushing total in 62 years, the third-lowest ever and the fewest combined rushing yards ever in a game played outside of ... Buffalo?

Both games in NFL history with fewer combined rushing yards came in the 1940s, both involved the Lions and the Chicago Cardinals and both were played at War Memorial Stadium in Buffalo.

On Oct. 17, 1943, the Lions (minus-53 rushing yards) and Cards (38) combined for minus-15 in a game that the Lions won 7-0. On Sept. 15, 1940, the Lions (minus-10) and Bears (14) combined for four rushing yards in a scoreless tie.

The Eagles and Chargers tied the NFL record for fewest combined rushing attempts in a game with 34. The record was set on Dec. 5, 1993, with the Falcons (12) and Oilers (22), and matched on Dec. 24, 1995, with the Falcons (15) and 49ers (19).

The Eagles-Chargers game was only the second in NFL history in which neither team ran for 25 yards. The first was the 1940 Lions-Bears game.

Everybody seems to forget that the Eagles' run defense really isn't THAT good...

I think we can do well against LT this weekend...
